Remembering the Person of the Spirit: A Guide for the Disciple

Brothers and sisters, as we gather together in our studies—whether it's in a small Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces, or even just wrestling with a scripture passage on our own—it’s easy to get caught up in the sheer *power* of the Spirit. We see the amazing work He does, the conviction He brings, the peace that settles over a struggling heart. It's overwhelming, and it's wonderful!

But today, I want us to pause and anchor ourselves on a foundational truth, one that sometimes gets lost in the fervor of the work: The Holy Spirit is a Person. Not a force, not an impersonal energy source we can simply "use" when the lesson plan gets tough.

When I was first getting my bearings in the field, I remember thinking that the Spirit was this vast, invisible ocean of power. You could dip your hands in, and it would lift you up. But the more I studied, the more I realized I was treating Him like a resource rather than the divine Person He is. It’s a subtle but critical distinction that changes everything about how we approach our own missionary discussions and how we teach others.

The Spirit: A Person with a Sovereign Will

The principle that the Spirit is a Person—and that He is God—is paramount. It means we cannot treat Him like a tool that needs to be manipulated or commanded. We can’t approach the Spirit saying, "Spirit, please do X now," as if we are giving an order to an object. We must approach Him with reverence, respect, and an understanding that He has a sovereign will.

The scriptures are wonderfully consistent on this! When you read John 14, notice how Jesus speaks of the Spirit using pronouns that denote personhood. He *will* teach, He *will* testify, He *will* abide. These aren't just abstract concepts; they are declarations about a divine Being who has a will and a purpose.

Remember this, especially when preparing for your own mission prep: The Spirit doesn't operate like a switch we flip. He guides, He testifies, and He draws. Our job, as disciples, is to cultivate the *receptivity* to His guidance, not to manufacture the conditions for His arrival.

This understanding helps us keep our focus right where it belongs: on Christ. As David Guzik pointed out when studying the prophets, the Spirit often guides our attention back to Jesus. He desires that our focus remains on the Savior, not on Himself, but that doesn't negate the reality of His personhood! We need both the focus on the Atonement *and* the reverence for the Comforter.
