Rooted Deep: Growing a Life of Abundant Life Like a Tree

Feeling the pull of the Spirit to deepen your discipleship? Let's look at what it means to have roots that draw strength from the gospel.

Sometimes, when the world feels like a storm brewing around the mission field, or even just around our own lives here at home, it’s easy to feel like we’re just weathering the weather. We worry about the next challenge, the next transfer, or even just what the next week will bring.

But have you ever stopped to really picture what it means to be an established tree? Not just surviving, but thriving—giving fruit season after season? It got me thinking the other day, and I wanted to share this powerful image with all of you fellow rogue disciples.

The passage from Psalm 1 is such a beautiful anchor for us. It speaks of the blessed man whose delight is in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. The promise that follows is profound: he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and all that he doeth shall prosper.

It’s more than just poetry; it feels like a divine blueprint for discipleship. We, as Latter-day Saints, are called to be exactly that—trees drawing sustenance from the living water of revelation and scripture.

If you haven't seen this reflection, I highly recommend checking out the source video, which beautifully unpacks this concept through a prayerful lens:

What struck me most, after watching it and reading the accompanying thoughts, was the imagery of the prayer itself. It’s not just about *having* good things; it’s about *being* rooted in the right things. We pray for roots of abundant health, a trunk of liberation, branches of prosperity, and leaves of green treasure.

Digging Deeper: What are our roots?

When we talk about deep roots, we're talking about where we draw our strength when the inevitable winds of trial blow. For us, that source is the gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s what sustains us when the missionary discussions get tough, or when we feel discouraged after a difficult week of service. It’s the constant, quiet work of scripture study.

This isn't a passive thing, though. It requires active cultivation. Are we spending time in the *Social Scripture Study* layer in LivingBook? Are we joining a Book Club or a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces? These are the places where we don't just *read* scripture; we wrestle with it, we apply it, and we let it soak into our very core.

Remember, every member can be an internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Our discipleship doesn't stop when we leave the MTC, or even when we get home. It continues right here, in our homes, our online connections, and our hearts.

If you are feeling the call to deepen your own roots this week, I encourage you to use this week to focus on one scripture passage that has felt particularly sustaining to you lately. Maybe it’s a passage about covenants, or perhaps something about the Atonement. Spend time meditating on it, just as the Psalm suggests.

For those looking for a tangible way to build that foundation, I highly recommend diving back into the teachings of Iron Rod. If you haven't explored his insights on discipleship, check out some of his writings available in LivingBook. They are gold for anyone aiming to be more Christlike.

And speaking of strengthening our connections, I’d love to hear what *your* roots are drawing strength from right now. If you've been doing any focused study, drop a comment below!
