Brothers and sisters, I was reflecting this week on how often we encounter information—whether it’s in the news cycle, in a challenging conversation during missionary discussions, or even in official documentation—where the surface-level reading doesn't match the deeper reality. It can feel like the truth is being deliberately obscured, or at least, presented in a confusing manner.

It reminds me of a recent observation I made while reviewing some public health discussions. I watched a segment detailing how documentation surrounding mortality was being adjusted. What struck me wasn't the topic itself, but the *process* of how the information was being categorized. There was a distinction being made between a 'cause of death' and a 'contributing condition.'

In our own work—in the field, in the temple, or even in a quiet home visit—we are constantly taught to look beyond the headline. We learn to ask: Is this the primary issue, or is it a factor that made the primary issue worse? Is this the root cause, or is it just a symptom?

Discerning the Layers: A Disciple Skill

This principle of careful discernment is vital for every one of us who is called to be an internet missionary. When we are preparing to teach the restored gospel, we aren't just reciting facts; we are sharing a restored narrative. And narratives, like any complex system, have layers.

When we study the scriptures, we see this all the time. We can’t just read the account of the Book of Mormon and stop. We have to ask: What was the underlying cultural tension? What was the spiritual principle at stake? What does this teach us about the Atonement?

This week, I encourage you to apply this 'layers' mindset to your own study. If you're reading about a difficult historical period, don't just absorb the dates. Ask: What spiritual principle was being violated? What commandment was being ignored? What does this teach me about the necessity of repentance?

It’s a skill that takes practice, just like learning to speak in a mission setting. It requires humility to admit what you *don't* know, and the faith to trust the Spirit to guide you to the next layer of understanding.
