Seeing the Pattern: Covenant Faith in the Wilderness Years

Sometimes, when we're deep in the study of a specific book—maybe wrestling with the laws of Leviticus or the details of Numbers—it feels like we’re only looking at a single chapter. We get so focused on the immediate covenant commandment or the specific historical challenge that we miss the grand sweep of the narrative.

But brothers and sisters, as returned missionaries, and as disciples anywhere, all the time, we have to learn to zoom out. We have to take that bird's-eye view. Because the pattern of our journey—the journey of Israel in the wilderness—is a profound shadow of our own path to the Savior.

I was recently listening to a deep dive into the women of the wilderness, and it really struck me how woven into the spiritual life of that covenant community they were. It wasn't just about the men leading the march; the women—the handmaidens, the daughters of the nations—they were active participants in the testing, the devotion, and the ultimate renewal of the covenant.

The parallels are breathtaking. The crossing of the Red Sea, which Paul reminds us is a symbol of our baptism, is a moment of transition, a required passage through the 'bitter water' of the world. And what purifies that bitter water? A tree. A branch. A representation, ultimately, of the Savior hanging on the cross—the place where all healing takes place for our mortal lives to become immortal.

It’s a constant reminder that our discipleship isn't just about following rules; it’s about participating in a divine pattern of purification, covenant keeping, and reliance on the Atonement. We are constantly leaving the wickedness of the world, just as they left Egypt.

This week, I encourage you to do one thing while you are studying your scriptures or preparing for your next missionary discussion: try to see the pattern. Look for the 'type' or the 'shadow.' Where is the modern-day parallel to the pillar of fire and cloud representing the Spirit of God guiding us? Where is the 'bitter water' we are currently struggling to cross?

It takes effort, but seeing the overarching plan—the divine architecture behind the daily trials—is what sustains us when the going gets tough. It helps us remember that we are not wandering aimlessly; we are moving toward the Promised Land, guided by the Spirit and sustained by the Savior.
