Seeing the Pattern: How Jesus Exceeds All Authority
As we study Hebrews, we see the pattern: every great deliverer points ultimately to Christ. Let's dig into how Jesus fulfills and surpasses every promise.
Sometimes, as returned missionaries, we get so focused on the *next* assignment—the next call, the next teaching moment—that we lose sight of the grand, sweeping narrative thread woven through it all. We get caught up in the immediate needs of the field, the immediate needs of our companions, or even the immediate needs of our own preparation.
But the Spirit, bless its heart, has a way of pulling us back to the foundational truths. When we study passages like Hebrews, we aren't just reading history; we are tracing the divine blueprint. We are seeing the pattern of revelation itself.
The Echo of Greatness
The author of Hebrews was speaking to a group of Latter-day Saints who were wavering under persecution. They were looking back at the immense authority figures of their past—the prophets, the great leaders—and wondering if the covenant they had made with Jesus was truly superior to the covenant established before. The book’s entire thrust is to answer that question with resounding certainty: Yes, Jesus is greater.
The author builds this case masterfully, showing how Christ fulfills and surpasses everything that came before. And when he gets to Moses, we see the culmination of that argument. Moses was monumental. He was the deliverer from bondage, the lawgiver, the man who brought Israel to the threshold of the Promised Land. He was, by all accounts, the greatest leader of his people.
But here’s where the Spirit nudges us to look deeper than mere comparison. The author doesn't just say, "Jesus did X, and Moses did Y." He shows that Jesus *is* the fulfillment of the promise that Moses pointed toward. Think about the parallels: the serpent lifted in the desert (Numbers 21) pointing to Christ lifted on the cross (John 3:14); the manna in the wilderness pointing to Jesus as the Bread of Life (John 6).
It’s a powerful reminder that in the work, we are not just delivering facts; we are pointing to the ultimate fulfillment. We are pointing to the Savior. Every testimony, every doctrinal discussion, every time we share a scripture—we are participating in this eternal pattern.
It can feel overwhelming sometimes, trying to grasp the scope of what the Atonement accomplishes, or how vast the covenants are. It’s easy to feel like we’re just scratching the surface of the Plan of Salvation. But remember the pattern: Christ is the culmination. He is the ultimate authority, the perfect fulfillment of every commandment, every promise, and every prophecy.
This week, as you study, I encourage you to look for those "types" and "antitypes." Where does the pattern lead? Where does the evidence point? Keep asking those hard questions. That’s where the Spirit guides us to deeper discipleship.
