Seeing the Pattern: How the Wilderness Journey Points to the Savior

Sometimes the deepest truths are found when we zoom out and see the pattern connecting seemingly disparate events in scripture.

It’s easy, when we’re knee-deep in the day-to-day work—whether that’s studying for missionary discussions, preparing for a transfer, or simply trying to help a friend understand a difficult doctrine—to feel like we’re just moving from one chapter to the next. Like a long, dusty trek through the wilderness.

But what if we pause? What if we take a moment, just like we do when we study the scriptures in a Book Club, and zoom out to take a bird's-eye view? The pattern, brothers and sisters, the pattern is always pointing back to the Savior.

I was recently listening to a deep dive into the book of Numbers, focusing on the women in that journey. It was a powerful reminder that even in times of wandering, testing, and what feels like displacement, the covenants we make and the promises we hold are always anchored to a divine plan. It made me think about how often we, as disciples, get caught up in the immediate challenge—the ‘bitter water’ moment—without seeing the whole picture.

The speaker beautifully connected the physical journey of Israel to the Plan of Salvation. The crossing of the Red Sea, the manna, the pillar of cloud and fire—these aren't just historical footnotes; they are types and shadows of our own experience following Christ. The bitter water made sweet by the tree branch? That’s a profound picture of the Atonement.

It strikes me how often we focus only on our own struggles—our own 'wilderness' moments—and forget that the Lord has already provided the ultimate purification and healing through Him. We are not meant to wander in ignorance; we are meant to follow the path illuminated by the Spirit.

Being Christlike in the Desert

This resonates so deeply with me right now as I think about what it means to be an internet missionary today. We don't have the physical boundaries of a field, but we certainly have our own deserts of doubt, misunderstanding, and cultural challenge. We are constantly drinking from 'bitter water'—the tough questions, the skepticism, the sheer difficulty of sharing the gospel in a secular context.

But just as the Israelites were sustained by the pillar of fire and cloud, we are sustained by the Spirit, by our covenants, and by the constant reinforcement of our brethren and sisters. It requires us to look beyond the immediate struggle and see the overarching covenant pattern: obedience leads to purification, and purification leads to eternal life.

If you want to dig into this beautiful synthesis of scripture, I highly recommend listening to the full episode of the podcast episode. It really helps illuminate how the covenant community, including the roles of women, were woven into that sacred tapestry.

A Quick Mission Prep Skill: When you feel overwhelmed by the 'wilderness' of a new teaching or a difficult conversation, pause. Don't react immediately. Instead, recall the pattern: What covenant promise is this moment pointing toward? What does the Savior’s life model for overcoming this specific challenge? This simple act of zooming out can bring profound peace.

If you want to keep digging into these deep scriptural connections, I encourage you to check out the Social Scripture Study layer inside LivingBook. Sometimes seeing how others have highlighted related scriptures or offered insights can help you see the pattern too!

As always, remember that every member can be an internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Keep drawing near to the Spirit!

Warmly,

A Fellow Disciple
