Seeing the Pattern: Staying Rooted in the Truth Amidst Shifting Currents

Brothers and sisters, as we continue to be called to be Internet missionaries, we are going to see things—things in the news, things in the local area, things in the digital ether—that can sometimes feel confusing, even startling. It’s a constant reminder that the gospel is so precious, and the stakes are so high, that we must remain vigilant in our testimonies.

Recently, I came across some reports concerning the leadership and holdings of the Community of Christ. It’s natural, when we are so deeply immersed in the work and focused on the covenants we’ve made, to pause and ask: What does this all mean for the truth? What does it mean for the gathering of Israel?

It’s easy to get caught up in the details—the property lines, the temple lots, the names of the leaders. But as returned missionaries, we know that the most vital thing isn't the deed to a piece of land; it’s the covenant kept and the Spirit received. Our focus, always, must be on Christ and the restoration He accomplished.

Staying Rooted: A Reminder for Our Discipleship

What struck me while reviewing some of this external information was the sheer breadth of the differences in doctrine and practice among various groups claiming lineage to the early days of the Restoration. It really drives home the principle that we must continually test everything against the pure, unadulterated word of revelation found through modern prophets.

This isn't meant to cause anxiety, my dear disciples. Instead, I want this to serve as a gentle nudge—a moment to deepen our personal study. When we are studying the scriptures, when we are in our Book Club, or when we are using the Social Scripture Study layer in LivingBook, we aren't just collecting facts; we are building a fortress of knowledge around our hearts. We are learning to discern the voice of the Spirit from the noise of the world.

Remember the power of personal testimony. That’s the Spirit guiding you back to the foundational truths we know to be true through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A Bite-Sized Mission Prep Skill: The Art of Gentle Inquiry

If you are preparing for your own mission, or if you are just practicing being an Internet missionary today, I want to share a small skill regarding challenging questions. Sometimes an investigator might bring up a point of doctrine or history that seems to contradict something they read elsewhere. Don't feel the need to immediately correct them with a detailed rebuttal. Instead, practice the gentle inquiry. You can respond with something like, “That’s a really interesting point. What makes you feel that way?” This invites them to share their underlying concern, which often reveals the true gap in understanding we can help them fill with kindness and scripture.

We are building discipleship, not winning debates. We are inviting them to *feel* the Spirit of truth.
