Seeing the Patterns: Discernment in the Modern World

When the culture seems to be morphing in unexpected ways, it's a powerful reminder that our spiritual vigilance—our constant effort to be Christlike—is more crucial than ever.

Brothers and sisters, as we continue our journey as rogue disciples, we are constantly being called to look deeper—to see beyond the surface noise of the day and discern the patterns at play. Sometimes, what we see in the cultural currents—the way people express themselves, the roles society assigns, or the very definitions of identity—can feel like a profound, almost unsettling metamorphosis.

Recently, I was reflecting on a talk by Jonathan Cahn that really struck a chord. He spoke about how certain ancient principles, or what he calls 'principalities,' can exert a powerful influence on modern culture, specifically touching on the roles of women. It was a sobering, yet deeply thought-provoking, look at how cultural shifts can sometimes obscure fundamental truths about what the Lord has ordained for us.

What resonated with me most wasn't the fear, but the call to *discernment*. The message wasn't to panic, but to recognize the underlying principles at stake—the very definitions of man, woman, motherhood, and family that the Savior restored to us. It’s a powerful reminder that our understanding of the gospel shouldn't be limited to Sunday morning lessons; it must permeate how we view the world around us, whether we are in the MTC, in a missionary discussion, or simply running errands.

Maintaining Our Distinct Identity

The core challenge, it seems, is the erosion of distinct, complementary roles. The Spirit whispers to us that nothing is meant to be mixed or replaced. As we study the scriptures, whether through a Book Club in HolyPlaces or deep dives in our Bible Study Groups, we are constantly being taught about the divine order. We must anchor ourselves in the truth that man and woman are distinct, complementary, and divinely appointed.

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life." (John 14:6)

When the world tries to blur those lines, our job—as disciples everywhere—is to hold fast to the truth, to live so visibly that our lives testify of the restored pattern. This isn't about judgment; it’s about preservation. It’s about remembering the covenant path.

A Bite-Sized Mission Prep Skill: Asking the 'Why'

If you’re preparing for the field, or even just having a missionary discussion with someone who is questioning things, I want to give you a small tool. When someone raises a complex, culturally charged question—the kind that feels big and abstract—don't just give the doctrinal answer. Instead, practice asking, "What does that idea make you feel about your relationship with the Lord?"

This shifts the conversation from a debate about philosophy (which can be exhausting) to a conversation about the Spirit and personal revelation. It brings the focus back to the heart, which is where the gospel always belongs.

Staying Connected to the Source

This kind of deep study requires community. If you’ve been feeling spiritually adrift lately, I strongly encourage you to check out the resources available in LivingBook. If you’re wrestling with complex doctrine, consider diving into the social scripture study layer—highlighting a passage and seeing what insights the community has generated can be a true blessing. If you prefer structured learning, join a Book Club!

For those of us who are seasoned travelers in this work, remember that every single member can be an internet missionary. We don't need to be in a specific location or in a specific uniform to be disciples. We can be disciples right where we are.

If this message resonated with you, or if you want to discuss these patterns further, let's connect. We're hosting a free weekly Disciple Challenge this week—a chance to apply these principles right away. Details are posted in the community feed. And if you want to dig deeper into the prophetic word, I highly recommend checking out the latest works of Iron Rod authors available in LivingBook.
