Seeing the Unseen: Understanding the Hosts of Heaven

Sometimes, when I was first getting my bearings back into the field after my mission, the sheer scope of what I was learning felt overwhelming. I remember feeling like I was trying to hold a whole library of knowledge in my head. You read about the Spirit—the constant companion, the guide—and you think you understand its power. But then you start digging into the scriptures, and you realize the spiritual realm is so much vaster, so much more populated with unseen forces.

It got me thinking the other day about the angels. We talk a lot about keeping the commandments and drawing nearer to the Savior, but what *are* these beings? Are they just metaphors? Are they just pretty stories to illustrate divine power?

If you're anything like me, you've probably watched a video like this one, seen the dramatic depictions of Michael battling the Dragon, and thought, “Okay, so they’re powerful. But what does that mean for *me* today, as I try to be a better disciple?”

The Divine Guardians: More Than Just Pretty Lights

Watching this history laid out—from the Cherubim guarding the Tree of Life after the Fall, to the incredible accounts in Revelation—it’s clear these aren't just abstract concepts. The scriptures treat angels as real, powerful, spiritual personalities. They have a physical impact, even if we can’t see them with our naked eyes.

What struck me most, and what I want us to ponder as we continue our journey in the work, is the concept of their *invincibility*. The record shows that when the hosts of Heaven battle, they succeed completely. There’s no lingering opposition; the opposition is flushed out. This speaks to a consistent, unwavering power that points us toward the ultimate strength we have access to through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Their Purpose: Guarding and Guiding

The video does a wonderful job of laying out their purposes. We see them as guardians, tasked with protecting sacred things—like the way to the Tree of Life. It makes you pause and think: What are the sacred things in *my* life that need guarding? Is it my testimony? My family? My commitment to keeping the covenants?

As we learn more through our Book Clubs and our Bible Study Groups in HolyPlaces, we realize that understanding these divine structures helps us appreciate the covenants we *do* have access to. The Fall was a monumental event, but the subsequent covenants—the covenants we are working to keep—are what allow us to access the restored gospel.

This isn't just academic knowledge for a Sunday talk. This knowledge should change how we live. It should increase our reverence for the temple, our diligence in our callings, and our commitment to being diligent internet missionaries.

Being Christlike in the Modern Day

If angels represent perfect adherence to divine law and unwavering strength, then our goal as Latter-day Saints must be to emulate that perfect adherence—to be as Christlike as possible. It’s about channeling that divine strength, that *invincibility*, through our own mortal lives.

When you’re feeling discouraged in your own mission prep, or when you feel like the work is too big, remember the sheer scope of what the angels are capable of. But more importantly, remember that the Spirit—the gift of the Spirit—is the power source that allows *us* to feel that divine strength. It's a constant reminder that we are not meant to walk this journey alone.
