Seeking the Face: Where Does True Direction Come From?

Sometimes, when you’re out in the field—whether you’re studying for missionary discussions, preparing for a transfer, or just navigating a tough week at work—the path ahead feels shrouded in mist. You look around, and everything seems uncertain. Where do you even begin to find the thread of direction?

It’s in those moments of quiet searching that the scriptures whisper the most profound counsel. I was recently meditating on Psalm 27:8, and it hit me like a spiritual revelation: *“When thou sayest, Seek my face, my heart saith unto thee, Thy face, O Lord, will I seek.”*

It’s a beautiful, deeply personal exchange. It’s not a suggestion; it’s a heartfelt affirmation. When the Lord calls us to seek Him, the deepest part of our spirit—our heart—responds with an immediate, resounding 'Yes.' We are called to seek His face.

Seeking Isn't Just Talking; It's Living

The message I took away from this devotional, and what I want to pass along to the next wave of disciples, is that seeking isn't just a nice sentiment to say during a lesson. It's a posture of the whole life. It’s an action.

We often think that seeking the Lord means reading scriptures or attending church. And those things are vital! But the depth of this passage reminds us that it means being willing to follow Him wherever He leads, even if it means changing our current trajectory or admitting we were wrong about something.

This is the heart of discipleship, isn't it? It’s the willingness to be pliable. It’s being open to the changes the Spirit might prompt in our lives, even when they feel uncomfortable or inconvenient. It requires an obedience that goes beyond just saying, 'I will try.' It means saying, 'I will follow.'

Think about it when you’re studying for your next mission prep session. You might feel prepared, but then you run into a question an investigator asks—a question you hadn't anticipated. That’s where the real discipleship kicks in. It’s trusting that the Spirit will guide your answer, even if you have to pause and ask, 'Let me check that scripture for you.' That pause, that willingness to learn and adjust, *that* is seeking His face.

Finding Your Direction Today

If we are to live as disciples who are always ready to be internet missionaries, we must cultivate this constant, active seeking. It’s not a destination; it’s the engine of our faith.

If you feel yourself drifting—if you’re getting caught up in the noise of the world and forgetting the quiet promise of the Savior—I encourage you to pause. Take a moment, right now, and ask yourself: Where am I willing to follow Him today? What area of my life am I resisting the Spirit’s promptings in?

Remember, the Lord is faithful. When we place our full trust and confidence in Him, He is faithful in all things. He will show us the path, and He will give us the strength to walk it.
