Sifting Through the Speculation: Understanding Prophecy with the Spirit's Guidance
When deep questions about scripture arise, the best tool isn't more research, but deeper reliance on the Spirit and solid doctrine.
Brothers and sisters, if you’ve spent any time in the field, or even just studying scripture in your quiet moments, you know that the scriptures are a living, breathing record. They are filled with profound mysteries, deep covenants, and sometimes, questions that make your head spin trying to reconcile them all.
It’s easy, when we’re passionate about the Plan of Salvation and eager to share the gospel, to get caught up in the endless stream of online speculation. We see a verse, we see a number, and suddenly, we’re deep into a rabbit hole of interpretation—the kind that can make even a seasoned missionary feel a little dizzy.
Recently, I was pondering a question that came up in a discussion I was following—the one about Solomon and the number 666. It’s a topic that has generated more speculation than a thousand social media threads combined! It’s a perfect example of how, even when we are trying to be diligent students of the word, the sheer volume of information can obscure the simple, guiding truth.
The Danger of Speculation vs. The Power of Doctrine
When we watched a recent Q&A tackling this very topic, it was a powerful reminder. The speaker was careful to distinguish between what the scriptures *say* and what people *assume* based on modern anxieties or historical patterns. The core message, which always rings true when we’re preparing for the Lord’s coming, is this: the Spirit guides us toward doctrine, not toward sensationalism.
The speaker was very clear when addressing the idea of connecting Solomon to the Antichrist. He gently walked us through the source of the confusion—the number appearing in connection with Solomon’s immense wealth (First Kings 10:14)—and then contrasted that with the context of Revelation. He helped us see that while the Bible does prophesy of a figure in the last days, the interpretations built up over centuries—linking names to numbers, or equating success with corruption—can become academic exercises divorced from the Spirit.
It was a beautiful lesson in discernment. It taught me that when we encounter these deep, complex prophecies, our first instinct shouldn't be to find the *definitive* answer on the internet. Instead, our first instinct should be to pause, breathe, and ask: What does the Spirit feel like when I study this?
A Skill for the Field: Trusting the Core Narrative
This brings me to a little piece of missionary preparation I want to share with you all. Next time you are in a missionary discussion, or even just talking with a friend who brings up a complex doctrinal question, try this:
- Acknowledge the Question: Validate their curiosity. (“That is a really deep question, and it shows you’re thinking deeply about the plan.”)
- Pivot to the Core: Instead of diving into the minutiae of the debate, pivot back to the foundational gospel truth. (“While there are many interpretations, what is most certain is that the Savior lives, and the Atonement is the key to eternal life.”)
- Invite Study: Suggest a resource. (“If you’d like to study the context of this further, I found some excellent material in the Book Club section of LivingBook that we could look at together.”)
This isn't shutting down conversation; it’s redirecting it from speculation to discipleship. We are called to be teachers of the gospel, not debate champions!
Keep the Light On
My dear disciples, remember that our calling is to be Internet missionaries, disciples anywhere, all the time. We don't need to have every historical or prophetic question answered in one sitting to be effective. We just need to carry the light of the restored gospel, and the Spirit will guide our words.
If you're looking to deepen your understanding of how to handle these tough questions, I highly recommend checking out the latest teachings on discernment. I found a few helpful insights in the HolyPlaces Book Club discussion threads lately. It’s a wonderful place to learn how others are applying scripture study in real-time.
If you’d like to practice walking through a difficult question yourself, I’d love for you to bring it to Davee. He’s been trained on some incredible material and is ready to play the role of the AI Investigator with you!
Stay diligent, keep your hearts humble, and remember that the Spirit is our greatest resource.
