Speaking Truth Gently: Finding the Intersection of Love and Reality

Sometimes the hardest conversations are the ones where truth bumps up against deeply held beliefs. Let's talk about how to approach those moments with the Spirit guiding our words.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever found yourself standing at a crossroads in a missionary discussion—or even just a casual conversation in the temple—where the truth you know, the truth taught in the scriptures, feels like it's bumping up against someone else's deeply held, yet inaccurate, understanding of reality?

It can feel awkward. It can feel heavy. You want to love the person, you want to honor the Spirit, but you also know that silence, in certain moments, might be interpreted as agreement, and that’s something we want to avoid in our efforts to help others come unto Christ.

It reminds me of watching some recent discussions pop up online. I watched a clip recently where the conversation touched on difficult topics regarding personal identity and the definition of truth. It was challenging to watch, but it gave me a lot to chew on, particularly when the discussion veered into defining what "love of God" means when confronted with differing views on reality.

What struck me most wasn't the disagreement itself, but the *method* of the disagreement. When the conversation circled back to the concept of God's love, the underlying principle seemed to be: God's love is not blind acceptance; it is a love that desires us to live in accordance with reality. It's a love that respects the truth, even when that truth is uncomfortable to hear.

The Spirit and the Gentle Truth

As returned missionaries, we are constantly refining our ability to be both firm in the gospel and gentle in our delivery. We learn that the Spirit doesn't just whisper answers; it helps us find the *right* words to ask the *right* questions. When we are trying to help someone understand that the gospel requires us to live in harmony with divine reality—whether that’s regarding sin, covenants, or identity—we can’t just lead with pronouncements. We have to lead with the Spirit.

Think about how we approach an investigator who asks, “But what does God’s love mean if I feel so happy doing this?” We can’t just say, “No, you can’t.” We have to gently pivot back to the core covenant path. We can ask, “What does the scriptures teach about the covenants we make? How does that covenant help us feel happy *and* safe with God?”

This is the heart of preach my gospel. It’s not about winning an argument; it’s about inviting someone to feel the warmth of the Atonement and the reality of the covenant path. It’s about showing them that true, lasting joy comes from aligning their lives with the reality of the restored gospel.

Mission Prep Skill: The "Why" Pivot

Here’s a little mission prep nugget for all of us, whether we’re standing in a stake center or right here in our living rooms as internet missionaries. When you sense a conversation getting bogged down in semantics or personal opinion, try the "Why" Pivot. Instead of debating the specific point (e.g., "You are wrong about X"), pivot to the foundational principle: “What does that idea suggest about *why* we should strive to live in covenant with Heavenly Father?”

This shifts the focus from a battle of definitions to a shared pursuit of eternal truth. It allows the Spirit to do the heavy lifting.

If this conversation about speaking truth with love resonated with you, I encourage you to join us for our next virtual gathering. We’re diving deep into the Book of Mormon this week, and we’ll be using some excellent resources from Iron Rod authors to deepen our understanding of covenants. It’s a wonderful place to practice these delicate conversations with trusted disciples.
