Standing Firm When the World Whispers Lies: A Disciple's Perspective
When the cultural narrative feels overwhelming, remember the steadfast truth found in scripture and the strength found in our covenants.
Sometimes, you hear voices—voices from the cultural sphere, from the media, even from friends who mean well but are speaking from a place of misunderstanding. They build narratives, they throw out talking points, and if you don't hold to *their* narrative, they claim you're the problem. It can feel like standing in a spiritual crosscurrent, where the current is strong, and the words coming from the "wicked" seem so loud and persuasive.
It reminds me of something the Spirit has been drawing my attention to lately, something that hits right at the core of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in these times. It’s easy to get swept up in the noise, to feel anxious about what the world is doing, what the political climate is doing, or even what the Church is doing.
We are called to be Internet missionaries, disciples anywhere, all the time. That means our footing has to be solid, rooted not in shifting political winds, but in the eternal truths found in the Book of Mormon and the teachings of the Prophet. When the world’s rhetoric is deceitful, where do we anchor ourselves?
What struck me most in listening to this message was the contrast: the deceitful words that lie and wait for blood versus the speech of the upright that rescues. It’s a powerful reminder that our defense isn't eloquent debate skills, though those are helpful. Our defense is the truth, delivered with the meekness and conviction that comes from knowing the gospel.
The House of the Righteous Stands Firm
The scripture passage referenced speaks of empires rising and falling, of great powers collapsing. It’s a pattern we see repeated throughout history, and it’s a pattern that should give us profound comfort, not fear. The house of the righteous, however, is built on a foundation that cannot be shaken. It endures.
As we engage in missionary discussions, or as we prepare for our own calls, we are constantly taught to be prepared for the opposition. We are taught to be Christlike, to be patient, and to rely on the Spirit. This principle—that the righteous house stands firm—is the bedrock of our missionary preparation. It means that no matter how loud the opposition gets, our focus must remain on the Savior and the plan of salvation.
A Bite-Sized Mission Prep Skill: Listening to Counsel
If there’s one thing I want to pass along as a returned missionary who has seen the field shift over the years, it’s this: Be diligent listeners. The speaker mentioned how a wise man listens to advice. In our discipleship, this translates directly to being teachable. When you are in a missionary discussion, or even just having a casual conversation with someone new, don't spend all your mental energy crafting your next perfect answer. Instead, practice the art of deep listening. Truly hear their question, even if it's poorly phrased or loaded with cultural assumptions. Let them finish. Then, use that counsel to guide your answer.
This week, I challenge you to practice this: In your next interaction—whether it’s a family dinner, a work meeting, or a planned Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces—listen twice as much as you speak. Don't just wait for your turn to talk; listen to understand the root of their question. That’s where the Spirit will guide your testimony.
Where to Deepen Your Study
If you want more material to chew on—and I mean *chew* it up, meditate on it until it becomes part of your very being—I highly recommend revisiting the teachings on the role of the priesthood and the covenants. I found some incredibly rich insights in the latest Iron Rod articles on covenants. If you haven't already, check out the LivingBook. It’s a goldmine for our collective discipleship.
If you're feeling the pull toward deeper study, consider joining a Book Club or perhaps exploring the Bible Study Groups available in HolyPlaces. These spaces are designed for us to wrestle with these big questions together, side-by-side.
Keep going, brothers and sisters. Don't let the noise distract you from the quiet, powerful work the Spirit is doing in your heart and in the lives of those around you. We are the rogue disciples, and our foundation is unshakable.
With love and encouragement,
Your Brother in the Gospel
