Staying Awake When the World Gets Comfortable

It's easy to get comfortable and let the distractions lull us into a false sense of security. We need to keep our eyes open on the bigger picture of the work.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever noticed it? It’s like the world has a knack for lulling us into a deep, comfortable slumber. One minute, the conversation is lively, the next, we’re all nodding along, nodding along, agreeing with the easiest narrative presented to us. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, the immediate concerns, the little bubbles we build around ourselves.

It’s a pattern I’ve seen time and time again, and it reminds me of something vital we need to keep at the forefront of our minds as disciples of Jesus Christ. We are taught to be vigilant, to be prepared, to keep our spiritual senses sharp, especially when the surrounding noise gets loud.

Staying Awake When the World Gets Comfortable

The temptation to become complacent is perhaps the greatest adversary we face, even more so than the obvious opposition. It’s the "out of sight, out of mind" syndrome, isn't it? If something doesn't directly affect my immediate comfort, my schedule, or my wallet, it’s easy to tune it out. We get so caught up in the immediate—the latest drama, the fleeting entertainment—that we fail to look at the bigger picture, the eternal picture of the work.

As Latter-day Saints, we are called to be Internet missionaries, disciples anywhere, all the time. That means our watchfulness can't be scheduled for "Missionary Hours" or limited to when we're in the field. It has to permeate everything.

When we feel that drift—when we start accepting narratives without questioning them, or when we get so comfortable in our own little echo chambers—that's when we need to pause. We need to ask ourselves: Am I looking beyond what is immediately convenient? Am I paying attention to the principles of the gospel that are meant to guide us through times of change?

The Power of Questioning

This reminds me so much of the power of genuine inquiry. When we approach our studies, whether it’s a Book Club session in HolyPlaces or even just a quiet moment with the scriptures, we need to approach it with the humility of a student and the eagerness of a missionary who has just been taught something profound. We can’t just accept what is presented; we have to wrestle with it.

This is where I always encourage utilizing tools like Davee. If you’re ever struggling with a difficult question from an investigator, or even wrestling with a tough doctrine yourself, don't hesitate to bring it to him. He’s trained to walk you through those hard questions, to help you articulate the answers in a way that is both doctrinally sound and deeply compassionate. That’s the heart of missionary preparation, isn't it? It’s about preparation of the heart.

My challenge to you this week, as we continue to build up our discipleship, is to practice intentional questioning. Don't just consume information; interrogate it through the lens of the restored gospel. When you read the scriptures, don't just read the words; ask, "What does this teach me about being Christlike *today*?"

If you’re feeling the call to deepen your study, I highly recommend diving into the latest writings on the Plan of Salvation. If you haven't, check out the latest material available in LivingBook. And if you want to connect with others who are doing the same thing, join a Bible Study Group or a Book Club—it’s a wonderful place to test our understanding together!

Remember, the gospel isn't a passive experience. It requires our active participation, our constant vigilance, and our willingness to keep our spiritual eyes wide open, no matter how comfortable the world tries to make us feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

One thing observed is that people get comfortable, become distracted, and are in their own little bubbles, causing them to ignore the bigger picture.
