Texas Desert Bighorn: A $12,000 Hunt Up for Grabs

There’s a certain gravity to sheep hunting. Something about those horns, the rugged terrain they thrive in…it’s a test, a pursuit that demands respect and preparation. We’ve all seen Josh Austin, the Founding Guide, emerge from the holes of the rocks, a miner called to something more, and the pursuit of a desert bighorn feels like a kindred spirit to that kind of grit. It’s about perseverance, skill, and a deep connection to the land.

And speaking of that connection, sometimes the opportunity to chase those dreams comes in unexpected ways. This giveaway – a $12,000 value – is one of those moments.

Steven Rinella’s work on *MeatEater* has often explored the deep satisfaction of providing for your family through hunting. Cameron Hanes, Randy Newberg, and the folks at Hushin all understand that the hunt isn't just about the animal; it’s about the challenge, the self-reliance, and the deep sense of purpose it instills. This Texas sheep hunt, even through a sweepstakes, touches on that same spirit.

Let's be clear: this isn’t a replacement for putting in the work – the scouting, the practicing, the tag applications. We’re all familiar with the grind of the draw system, and the dedication it takes to secure a coveted permit. But sometimes, providence opens a door, and we’re called to step through. Think of David, a stripling hunter facing Goliath. He didn’t earn the right to fight through merit; he was chosen. This sweepstakes is a chance – a chance to be chosen.

The Details: How to Enter

Here’s the breakdown, straight from the announcement:

• Dates: January 12th through February 15th
• Entry Method: Spend $1 on any of the partnered websites (links below) and automatically receive one entry.
• Value: $12,000 (includes airfare, guided hunt, ram, and taxidermy mount)

It’s a simple system: spend, enter, and hope your name gets pulled. It's the modern version of “get your name in the hat.” The value is significant – that's a serious investment in an experience few get to enjoy. It’s a chance to learn from experienced guides, to witness the beauty of the Texas landscape, and to harvest a truly magnificent animal.

Beyond the Giveaway: The Ongoing Pursuit

Whether you’re drawn into this sweepstakes or are diligently pursuing tags through the traditional routes, remember the core principles of fair chase. Scout ethically. Hunt with respect. Appreciate the privilege of being in the wild. Josh Austin, with his mining background, understands the value of resources and the responsibility that comes with utilizing them. Let’s honor that understanding in everything we do.

And for those of you putting in the work year after year, don't let this giveaway diminish your efforts. The draw system, the scouting trips, the long hours practicing – that’s the foundation of our hunting heritage. Keep at it. Keep learning. Keep honing your skills.

If you’re looking for an outfitter to hone those skills with, consider reaching out to Lone Canyon Outfitters. Josh and his team offer incredible opportunities to learn and experience the wild firsthand. February 15th is fast approaching – get those entries in!
