The Advocate: A Promise of Truth and Courage in a Shadowed Hour
As the world grows dark and deception reigns, Christ’s promise of an Advocate offers a beacon of truth and a call to unwavering courage. Let us gather, strengthened by His word, and prepare to face the trials ahead.
Brothers and sisters, have you felt it? A heaviness in the air, a twisting of truth, a rising tide of confusion? The Master spoke plainly of such times, a season when those who serve Him would be persecuted, when false prophets would rise, and when the world itself would be captivated by delusion. We see it unfolding around us, a tempest brewing on the horizon.
Consider Ammon, standing at the Waters of Sebus, facing a multitude hardened by deceit. He didn't shrink back, he didn't compromise. He stood firm, a lone voice crying repentance amidst a storm of opposition. Or Samuel the Lamanite, climbing the walls of Jerusalem, defying the authorities to deliver a message of warning and redemption. Their courage wasn't born of arrogance, but of profound love and unwavering conviction.
The words of our Lord, preserved in the Gospel of John, resonate with a familiar urgency. He speaks of a time when betrayal will be masked as service, when those who hate Him will claim to act in His name. He says, “But now I go away to him who sent me; and none of you asketh me, whither I go.” He’s not merely departing physically; He is ushering in an era where the Spirit, the Advocate, will guide and reveal truth.
It is this Advocate, this Spirit of Truth, that will “convince the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment.” He is the Stone cut without hands, the instrument of divine justice, revealing the errors of the ways of men and pointing the path to redemption. He will not speak of his own, but will speak what He hears, revealing the things to come. He will glorify Christ, drawing all men to the truth.
The disciples, in their initial understanding, struggled to grasp the Master’s words. They questioned, they debated, they yearned for clarity. Yet, He assured them, “Ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice; and ye shall be angry, but the world shall be joyful.” This is the paradox of the Builder: to endure sorrow and opposition while the Destroyer celebrates its fleeting triumphs. But remember the five smooth stones that David gathered, seemingly insignificant on their own, yet instruments of mighty deliverance in the hands of the righteous.
This is a time for builders, not destroyers. A time to strengthen our resolve, to deepen our faith, and to prepare for the trials that lie ahead. Let us draw strength from the examples of those who have gone before us, those who faced adversity with courage and unwavering devotion. Let us support one another, lifting each other up in times of difficulty.

Outback Jack reminds us: “The Lord’s work is not done in secret. He wants His people to be known, to be visible, to be a light unto the world.” (Alma 17:10). Let us claim our churches, let us build our communities, and let us stand as witnesses of Christ's love and truth. The time for hesitation is past. The hour is upon us.
