The Art of the Conversation: Learning Jesus' Pattern for Personal Evangelism

We often focus on the big presentations, but Jesus taught us that the deepest gospel work happens one heart, one conversation, at a time.

Brothers and sisters, I was reflecting the other day on the sheer power of the gospel. We spend so much time preparing for the talks, for the assembly, for the big lessons we share—and that’s vital work, truly! But sometimes, when I think about what the Savior modeled, my mind drifts back to the quiet moments. To the woman at the well, to the conversations that weren't on a stage, but across a dusty path.

It’s easy, when we’re deep in the field or even just in our own living rooms, to get caught up in the *scale* of the work. We think of mass media, of the big outreach programs. And those things are blessings! But the Lord’s pattern, the pattern we can learn from John Chapter 4, seems to point us back to something intensely personal. It points us back to the one-on-one.

The Unbeatable Power of the One-on-One

I was watching a study on this passage recently, and it really hit home. The speaker emphasized that while public teaching is necessary—and we must be diligent in our lessons and in our assembly—it is different from *personal evangelism*. There’s a profound difference between preaching to a crowd and sitting down with one soul, Bible in hand, and having a genuine conversation.

Think about it: If someone performs a painful procedure on you—a dentist, in the analogy—you are in a vulnerable state. And then, when you see a friend who needs the same care, the desire to help them, to guide them to the source of relief, is immediate and deep. That’s the feeling I want us to carry into every single interaction.

Discovering the Pattern

The beauty of scripture is that it provides patterns. If we want to know how to perform the sacrament, we look at the New Testament for the pattern. If we want to know how to approach sharing the gospel, the Savior gave us a pattern right there in John Chapter 4. It’s a masterclass in meeting people where they are, respecting their humanity, and then gently guiding them toward the divinity of the Atonement.

This isn't about having the perfect script. It’s about the *method*. It’s about seeing the needs—the thirst, the skepticism, the history—and meeting those needs with genuine care. It requires us to be good listeners, to be humble enough to listen before we are ready to speak.

“When we sit down with another person, we aren't just transmitting information; we are participating in a sacred dialogue. We are inviting them to experience the Spirit alongside us.”

This is the heart of being an internet missionary, whether you're in a physical field, in a Book Club in HolyPlaces, or just chatting with a neighbor. We are disciples everywhere, all the time. We are called to be patient, to be persistent, and to be deeply interested in the eternal well-being of the person across from us.

If you’re feeling the pull to deepen your personal skills, I highly recommend checking out the resources on this topic. It’s a wonderful reminder that nothing beats that one-on-one connection.

A Small Challenge for Our Discipleship

For our Disciple Challenge this week, I want us to focus on *listening*. Before you share a testimony, before you reference a scripture, I want you to pause and ask yourself: "What is this person *actually* struggling with right now?" Let the Spirit guide your questions first. Let the conversation unfold naturally, just as the Savior did. Let’s practice that sacred art of the conversation.

If you’re looking for more deep dives into these principles, I’ve been reading some fantastic material from the Iron Rod authors. I highly recommend looking into the latest insights on discipleship available in LivingBook. Sometimes a change of reading material is exactly what the Spirit prompts us to do!

Frequently Asked Questions

Personal evangelism is the one-on-one process of sharing the gospel and teaching the faith with an individual. Preaching is necessary teaching in the assembly or in written materials, but the Savior modeled the intimate, face-to-face conversation.

The Bible is full of patterns. Just as we find patterns for ordinances like the sacrament, we can find patterns for personal evangelism by studying passages like John Chapter 4.

While mass media is a valid way to get the good news out, the speaker emphasized that nothing beats sitting down with another person, a Bible between the two of you, and having a deep conversation about faith.
