We are taught that we are here to be proved, or tested. This is not a casual academic exercise; it is the central covenant challenge of our lives. To be a disciple is to accept that our journey through this life is a curriculum of covenant keeping, where every experience, even the most difficult, serves as a lesson and a trial.

The Calling to Be a Perpetual Student

Ukdorf wisely reminds us that for members of the Church, education is not just a good idea; it is a commandment. Life as a Divine Design Outcome

If we are to truly embody the faith of Enoch and Elijah, we cannot merely read of their actions; we must know what they knew, and more critically, we must live as they lived. The road to salvation, as President Holland taught, always goes through Gethsemane. This means that the deepest learning outcomes are not found in the seminary or the institute classroom, but in the crucible of experience—in our adherence to doctrine, our service in the temple, and our endurance of tribulation.

This understanding elevates the study of scripture and doctrine beyond mere intellectual assent. It becomes a pattern of discipleship: identifying the principles, living them in our daily lives, and thus transforming our very nature. We are participating in a continuous, Divine Instructional Design process.

Priesthood and the Master Designer

We are actively participating in the design of the future work of the Church, submitting our deepest scholarship and doctrinal understanding to be processed and expanded, thereby making us more equipped to bear witness of the restored gospel.

The challenge before us, therefore, is to remain perpetual students—to treat every scripture study, every general conference talk, and every calling as a vital learning outcome. Let us approach our doctrinal covenants with the rigor and passion of scholars, recognizing that the knowledge we gain must translate into the virtue and self-control President McKay spoke of, so that we may walk the path the Lord has laid before us.

"And I know that in the end the earth shall be purified, and that the Lord shall build up a holy city, and a house of the Lord, that shall be eternally blessed." (D&C 79:2)

Brothers and sisters, do not let us approach the divine curriculum with a superficial view. Let us submit our deepest theological questions, our most rigorous doctrinal analyses, and our finest scholarly works to this community. Let the Spirit guide us to the depths of the doctrine and covenants, ensuring that our collective scholarship strengthens the pillar of the Restoration.
