The Exceeding of Expectations: Finding the Miracle in Our Own Lives

Sometimes the greatest miracles are found not in grand gestures, but in how we meet the expectations—and the divine promises—of the Atonement.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever been in a moment where your expectations—the ones you set for yourself, for your family, or even for the Lord—were completely blown out of the water? Where the reality was so much bigger, so much more profound, than what you thought possible?

It strikes me, especially as we approach the season of the Savior’s birth, that the entire narrative of the Atonement is the ultimate 'exceeding of expectations.' Think about it. The prophets had expectations, the people had expectations, and yet, God didn't just show up—He *became* flesh. That alone defies all natural expectation. It’s the perfect example of what it means to trust the promises of the Covenant Path.

I was listening to some recent talks, and the conversation kept circling back to how deeply our families mirror our relationship with God. It’s a powerful concept, isn't it? Our earthly family unit—the way we support each other, the way we build traditions—is meant to reflect the spiritual family we are building with Christ. When we talk about the Lord, we are talking about the ultimate Family Reunion, a gathering that transcends time and space.

The speaker mentioned how sometimes we set the bar low—maybe we tell ourselves, “Nothing is going to happen this year,” or “We’ll just get through this week.” But the Spirit, dear friends, is always working to exceed those low expectations. It’s in the quiet moments of study, in the difficult conversations with an investigator, and even in the mundane act of gathering together as disciples that the Lord moves in ways we can’t predict.

The Strength in the Promise

When we are out in the field, whether we are doing formal missionary discussions or just having a casual conversation with a neighbor, the principle remains the same. We are relying on the promises of the Savior. We aren't relying on our own eloquence, our own charisma, or even the best *Iron Rod* lesson plan. We are relying on the Spirit, which testifies of the reality of the gospel.

I was reminded of a discussion about the power of testimony. Sometimes, the hardest part of missionary preparation isn't learning the facts; it's learning to feel the weight of the covenant. It’s learning to be unashamed of the gospel, no matter what the world around us seems to value.

This week, I encourage you to look at your own spiritual 'family unit.' Who are the people in your life—your ward family, your friends, your family—who are currently experiencing a moment of low expectation? Who needs to hear that the Lord is preparing to exceed their expectations? That’s where the work is calling us to be.

Remember that every member can be an internet missionary. You don't need to be standing in a mission field to share the light. You can do it right where you are—in your living room, in a Book Club discussion, or even just by being a steady, Christlike presence in your community.

A Little Mission Prep Thought

If you're feeling the call to deepen your understanding of the Atonement, I highly recommend diving into the scriptures surrounding John 14:25-27. Pay attention to the difference between the world's temporary comforts and the Spirit's abiding peace.
