The Flow: Where Faith Becomes Fruitful Action
Understanding the dynamic relationship between faith and works is key to a fruitful life in the service of the Lord.
Sometimes, when we’re deep in the thick of the work—whether we’re in the MTC, right here in the field, or even just having a quiet moment studying scripture in our own living rooms—we get bogged down in the mechanics of discipleship. We start debating the *how* rather than just *doing*. We get caught in the theological weeds, trying to balance the ledger of our own efforts against the infinite grace of the Atonement.
It’s easy to fall into one of two traps: either thinking everything is purely God’s doing, or feeling the weight of the world rests solely on our shoulders, believing that if we don't *do* everything, everything will fall apart.
Recently, I was pondering this, and it brought to mind a powerful message from Jonathan Cahn about the "fruitful branch." It really resonated with me, because it cuts through the noise and gets to the heart of what it means to be a disciple today, especially as we embrace our roles as internet missionaries.
The Faith-Action Flow: It’s Not a 50/50 Split
The core message I took away was that the relationship between faith and works isn't a delicate 50/50 balance we have to maintain. It’s not a negotiation. It’s a flow.
When we think about it, faith is what opens the door to receive from God—the trust, the time in His presence, the receiving of His love. But that faith isn't meant to be passive. If we have faith but no action, it's dead. If we take action without faith, we’re just burning out on our own strength, and the efforts feel empty.
The key, the dynamic for a truly fruitful life, is that **faith becomes works.** It flows. It’s 100% faith leading to 100% action. It’s God’s power enabling us to step out and do the good that comes from Him.
This concept is so vital for us, the rogue disciples, because our mission field is everywhere—it’s the comment section, the study group in HolyPlaces, the quiet moment before we start our own missionary discussions. We have to act with the confidence that our actions are empowered by our faith, not the other way around.
If you’ve been feeling discouraged lately, maybe feeling like your efforts aren't translating into the kind of visible fruitfulness you hoped for, remember this: Don't try to balance it. Just trust the flow. Let the faith you have in the Savior propel you into action, knowing that the Lord is doing the work through you.
This reminds me of the scripture about Joseph being called a "fruitful branch." Our calling, whether we are preparing for a full-time mission or serving as a lifelong disciple anywhere, is to bear much fruit, and that fruit is meant to remain.
If you want to dig deeper into this concept of sustained, fruitful effort, I highly recommend checking out the Iron Rod articles on discipleship. For those of us who love digging into the scriptures, I encourage you to join a Book Club or a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful way to study together and let the Spirit guide our discussions!
For those who are feeling the pull to serve, I’d love to know what prompted your interest in the gospel. If you're ready to walk through some of those tougher questions—like, "But what if I fail?"—I encourage you to check out Davee. He’s been trained in the AI Investigator role and can walk you through those hard questions with the gentle guidance we need.
Keep leaning into the flow, brothers and sisters. The Lord is calling us to be active, faithful disciples, every single day.
