It’s a natural instinct. We’ve been trained, we’ve been blessed by the Spirit, and we know the curriculum. We want the gospel to be received cleanly, beautifully, and efficiently. But sometimes, the greatest act of discipleship isn't giving the answer; it’s trusting the investigator enough to let them stumble toward the answer themselves.

I was reflecting recently on a video that really hit home for me. It spoke to a parenting dynamic—a kind of over-structuring that leaves no room for choice. And I realized that this dynamic, while presented in a mundane setting, mirrored a spiritual tendency we all face: the desire to control the spiritual journey of another.

We are called to be disciples, yes, but we are also called to be *facilitators* of the Spirit. We are not the primary source of revelation for our friends, our neighbors, or our fellow Latter-day Saints. That power belongs to the Spirit, and His gifts are wonderfully varied.

The Difference Between Guidance and Control

When we talk about being an internet missionary, we often think of crafting the perfect testimony or finding the perfect Book Club discussion prompt. And those things are vital! But what about the moments when the investigator looks blank, or when the questions they ask are messy, tangential, or even challenging? In those moments, the instinct is to jump in with the prepared response—the "family lunch" of doctrine.

But remember what the Savior taught us about the Atonement? It wasn't a forced outcome; it was a gift accepted through faith. Our gospel sharing should feel like that—a gentle invitation, not a mandatory meal plan. We need to ask the questions, and then, critically, we need to be comfortable with the silence that follows.

This is where the principle of be Christlike shines brightest. Christ didn't force discipleship; He invited it. He taught through example, through patience, and through allowing His disciples the space to wrestle with the divine mysteries alongside Him.

Here’s a simple skill to practice this week: During your next missionary discussion, or even just a casual chat with a friend, when you feel the urge to fill a silence, take a deep breath and wait three full seconds before speaking. In that pause, ask yourself: "What is the Spirit prompting me to *listen* for, rather than *say*?" Often, the most profound insights come not from our eloquence, but from our willingness to be quiet and receptive.
