The Gift We Carry: Being Ready to Share the Hope
Feeling the weight of the Lord's expectation? Remember that every single one of us is equipped to share the gospel, no matter where we are.
Sometimes, when we’re out in the field—whether we’re in the MTC, serving a stake, or even just running errands with our families—the sheer weight of what we know can feel heavy. We know the truth. We know the restored gospel. We know the joy that comes from following the Savior.
And then, you hear it. A question. A thoughtful inquiry from a friend, a neighbor, or maybe even an investigator at a missionary discussion. Suddenly, you’re faced with the beautiful, terrifying question: *How do I answer?*
It can feel like a massive assignment, like you need to be a seminary professor just to answer a simple question about the plan of salvation. But reading that excerpt from Elder Nelson always brings a necessary dose of perspective back to heart: “Each of you with a testimony of the truth of the restored gospel has opportunity to share that precious gift. The Lord expects you to be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness.”
The Gift is Already Yours
Friends, let’s pause and really absorb that. The Lord isn't expecting us to *acquire* the gift of sharing; He’s reminding us that the gift is already resident within us—the testimony itself. That testimony is the core of our discipleship. It’s the quiet, persistent whisper of the Spirit that confirms that Jesus Christ is the literal Son of God, that the Restoration was perfect, and that the gospel is eternal.
When I was first out in the field, I remember feeling inadequate. I thought I needed more seminary training, more polished answers, more years of service. I felt like I had to wait until I was a seasoned returned missionary, or maybe even a district leader, to be equipped enough. But the Spirit whispers differently, doesn't it? It whispers that the *calling* is available now.
This isn't just about formal missionary discussions, though those are vital. This is about being an internet missionary while sitting in your living room. It’s about being a disciple in the grocery store line. It’s about weaving the pattern of the restored gospel into the mundane fabric of our daily lives. We are called to be ready, always.
A Little Skill for Our Next Mission Prep: The 'Why' Question
If you are feeling the pull toward mission prep, or if you are already serving, I want to give you a small skill to practice. When you feel yourself getting flustered by a difficult question, don't rush to the theological answer. Instead, practice pivoting back to the *feeling* of the gospel. If asked a hard doctrinal question, respond with, "That's a profound question, and the best way I've found to understand it is through personal revelation. What I *feel* is..." This brings the focus back to the Spirit and your personal covenant experience, which is often the most persuasive thing we have.
Remember the guiding principle: Every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time.
