The Helper, The Spirit, and the Joy That Never Fades

Sometimes the hardest truths are the ones we need to hear when we are most ready to understand them. Let's talk about the Spirit's role.

Brothers and sisters, as we continue to gather strength and knowledge in our preparation for the work—whether we are in the MTC, in our assigned fields, or right here in our own living rooms as Internet missionaries—we often focus on the *what*: the lesson, the talk, the scripture passage. But today, I want us to focus on the *how*—the divine mechanism that helps us carry the message when our own words fail us.

I was recently studying some passages that really struck me regarding Jesus’s teachings to His disciples. It’s a powerful reminder that the Spirit doesn't just whisper; He *teaches*. He clarifies, He convinces, and He brings forth truth in a way that words alone can never achieve.

When we read the Gospel of John, we are reminded of the profound shift that occurs when Jesus speaks of His departure. He tells them, "I will send it unto you, even the Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."

This passage is a masterclass in divine communication. Jesus knows His disciples are wrestling with the logistics—*where* is He going? *When* will we see Him again? Their questions are natural, human, and perfectly understandable. They are trying to fit the infinite into finite questions. But Jesus gently guides them toward understanding something far grander than geography or timing.

He teaches them that the Helper (the Spirit) will not speak on His own accord, but will testify of everything He hears. This is vital for us, the rogue disciples. We are not meant to be sole sources of revelation. We are conduits. We are taught to rely on the Spirit, to study the scriptures deeply, and to use our tools—whether that’s a Book Club discussion in HolyPlaces or a deep dive through the Social Scripture Study layer in LivingBook—to help others hear what the Spirit already whispers.

The Analogy of Joy

What resonated most with me was the comparison Jesus made between the sorrow of childbirth and the joy of the new life. Right now, maybe we are feeling the strain of the work. Maybe we are facing difficult conversations, or perhaps we are feeling the weight of the world’s confusion about the Gospel. We might feel the 'sadness' of the process.

But Jesus promises that this temporary sorrow will turn into an overwhelming, undeniable joy—the kind of joy that no adversary, no worldly pressure, and no passing trial can ever take away. That joy comes from knowing the truth, and that truth is accessible through diligent study and reliance on the Spirit.

"But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth; ye shall not hear it of his own, but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak unto you."

This isn't just for missionaries; this is for every member who feels called to be a disciple anywhere, all the time. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with the sheer scope of the work, remember this: You are not expected to know every answer immediately. Your job is to keep the light on, to study diligently, and to invite others into the learning process.

Mission Prep Skill: Asking the Right Questions

If you are preparing for the field, or even just having a missionary discussion with a friend, remember Jesus's patience. When you feel yourself getting bogged down in a factual debate, pause. Instead of trying to *prove* a point, try to *guide* them to the Spirit. Ask questions that prompt reflection, like, "What do you think about the concept of divine agency?" or "Where have you seen the principles of the Plan of Salvation at work in your own life?" Let the Holy Places or a Book Club setting help you practice framing these open-ended questions.

The Savior's message is one of clarity, but the path to understanding that clarity is often paved with gentle inquiry. Keep seeking that deeper understanding, and don't hesitate to bring your questions to Davee. He’s excellent at walking through those tough theological waters!

I invite you to spend some time reflecting on the Gospel of John. It’s a beautiful reminder that the best revelations come when we are ready to receive them.
