The Inner Workings: Where True Change Begins
We often focus on outward actions, but the Lord's greatest work happens deep within the heart. Let's talk about changing nature, not just environments.
Brothers and sisters, as we continue on this journey of discipleship—whether we are newly called, preparing for our first mission, or have been back for years—it’s easy to get caught up in the *outward* signs of progress. We see the community building, the temples rising, the gospel spreading across the globe. And that’s wonderful! We are doing the work!
But sometimes, the most profound shifts don't come from a new program or a better strategy. They come from a quiet, internal transformation. I was reflecting this week on a powerful message from Elder Benson, and it really struck me how much we, as disciples, need to remember where the true source of change originates.
The Lord Works From the Inside Out
The core message is this: The world, by its very nature, tends to work from the outside in. It tries to mold us—through our job, our friends, our culture, or even our immediate circumstances. It tries to take us *out* of a place or a situation.
But the Savior? He works from the inside out. He doesn't just change our surroundings; He changes *us*. He changes our nature. And when we are changed internally, the external circumstances naturally begin to shift. That’s the power of the Spirit at work in a heart.
Be Christlike: The Ultimate Transformation
This concept of changing *nature* is what I think of when I think about true missionary preparation. It’s not about memorizing answers for missionary discussions, though that’s vital. It’s not just about knowing the scriptures, though that’s our foundation. It’s about cultivating the *disposition* of Christ within us.
When we focus on being Christlike—when we focus on changing our own hearts first—we become conduits for that divine change. We stop trying to *force* the gospel out, and instead, we become vessels that allow the Spirit to work through us, changing both us and those around us.
This is a beautiful reminder for all of us, whether we are in the MTC, serving in the field, or simply having a Bible Study Group at home. Our first field of effort, our first place of discipleship, is always our own heart.
A Bite-Sized Skill for the Internet Missionary
Since we are all called to be Internet missionaries, let's focus on this principle when we write or post online. Instead of posting a doctrinal statement and waiting for agreement, try posting a *testimony* of how the Spirit changed *you* this week. Share a small moment where you felt the Lord’s hand on your heart, and let your vulnerability invite genuine inquiry. That’s the inside-out approach in action.
If you want to dig deeper into how to answer the hard questions that come up when you share the gospel, I highly recommend checking out Davee. He’s been doing some excellent work walking through investigator questions, framing them around this very idea of internal change.
Invitation to Connect
To keep this momentum going, I’d love for us to keep discussing these deep principles. If you’re looking for a place to wrestle with these concepts with others, consider joining a Book Club through HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful way to take the principles from an Iron Rod article and apply them immediately to your life and your understanding of the gospel.
If you haven't done so already, take a moment to check out the latest insights on LivingBook—the Social Scripture Study layer is a goldmine for seeing how others are applying scripture to real life!
Remember, every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Let's keep working from the inside out.
