The Iron Rod and the Renewed Desire for Scripture

A stagnant desire for the word of God can be a warning sign. Let's examine how we might rekindle that flame, applying principles of diligent study and recognizing the Spirit’s subtle guidance.

The Brethren have repeatedly emphasized the vital importance of scripture study. Yet, even for those of us deeply committed to the Restoration, the desire for the word can wane. A dryness in our hearts, a feeling of obligation rather than fervent longing – these are not uncommon experiences. We recognize, as Nephi did, that “the spirit of prophecy…is not confined to one people, but it is a gift most freely given to any and every nation” (2 Nephi 29:4).

But what happens when that gift feels distant? When the familiar verses lose their power?

The video below offers twenty-five suggestions for reinvigorating one’s engagement with the Bible. While presented through a lens different from our own, many principles resonate with Latter-day Saint scripture study practices. The call to 'make it feel more accessible and appealing' speaks to the need for personalized approaches. A one-size-fits-all method rarely serves the individual soul.

Consider, for example, the suggestion to read alongside a commentary. While we benefit from the insights of BYU scholars and the teachings of General Conference, we must be wary of substituting human interpretation for the Spirit’s illumination. D&C 17:1-6 cautions against relying solely on the writings of others, emphasizing the necessity of personal revelation. The iron rod, remember, is grasped only by those who have direct contact with the word – not through intermediaries.

Another suggestion, journaling insights, echoes our own practice of recording impressions and testimonies. The Book of Mormon itself is a testament to the power of personal recording and reflection (Mosiah 27:33-37). However, we must be discerning. Our journals should not merely be repositories of information, but spaces for communion with the divine.

The video's mention of rekindling desire for those who lack it initially struck a chord. While our commitment to the covenants should provide an intrinsic motivation, we acknowledge that spiritual lethargy is a reality. Isaiah 55:6-9 reminds us that God is ready to hear the repentant, even when our hearts feel hardened. Perhaps a renewed focus on gratitude – recognizing the blessings of the Restoration, the priesthood, and the prophetic guidance – can stir within us a deeper desire for His word.

Let’s not dismiss any suggestion out of hand simply because it originates from a different tradition. The Spirit speaks through many voices, and wisdom can be gleaned from unexpected sources. The key is to filter all counsel through the lens of scripture and prophetic declaration, always verifying it against the teachings of the prophets and apostles.

Ultimately, the pursuit of scripture knowledge is not about ticking boxes or completing a checklist. It is about drawing closer to Christ, understanding His will, and becoming more like Him. It is a lifelong journey, requiring diligence, humility, and unwavering faith.
