The Language of the Spirit: Seeing the Gospel Through New Eyes

Brothers and sisters, friends, fellow disciples—have you ever witnessed something that simply stopped you in your tracks? Something that made you realize just how vast the Kingdom of God is, and how many unique ways the Spirit can testify of the Savior?

This little clip I came across today really stopped my heart. It showed a mother talking about her deaf son, and the sheer volume of words he now knows! It wasn't just rote memorization; it was understanding, connection, and language blooming in a way that testifies to the power of communication.

It got me thinking, didn't it? How often do we, in our own lives, feel like we are speaking a language that only we understand—the language of the gospel? Or, conversely, how often do we feel like we are struggling to communicate the profound truths of the restored gospel to someone who is hearing a completely different frequency?

This reminds me so much of the work we do. Whether we are in the MTC, sitting through missionary discussions, or even just having a quiet moment studying in the privacy of our own homes, we are all learning to translate the eternal into the temporal. We are learning the language of the Spirit.

The Language of Testimony

When we talk about testifying of Jesus Christ, we aren't just reciting doctrine; we are sharing a lived experience. We are translating the eternal into the language of the heart. Think about the covenants we have made. They are a language of commitment that speaks across time and culture. When we are learning to be more Christlike, we are essentially learning a new, beautiful dialect of discipleship.

This isn't just for full-time missionaries, though I know the dedication of our brethren in the field is unmatched. This is for all of us. Every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. We are all translators, translating the Book of Mormon, the restored gospel, and the power of the Atonement into the everyday conversations of our lives.

A Little Prep Skill & A Challenge

For this week, I want to challenge us to focus on *listening* as much as we focus on speaking. When you are in your next family gathering, or even in a Book Club setting in HolyPlaces, try to listen for the underlying *need* in the person speaking, rather than just waiting for your turn to share a scripture reference. Sometimes the greatest testimony is simply acknowledging the struggle in another person’s heart.
