The Law, the Gospel, and the Peril of Misapplication
We examine the dangerous error of blaming divine law or restored doctrine for personal failings, understanding instead that the problem resides in human understanding and application.
When the world critiques the doctrines and covenants of the Church, the accusation is often sweeping and dramatic. We hear claims that the gospel, the restored plan of salvation, somehow *created* the problems we face—the division, the sin, the deep-seated opposition. It is a temptation for the weary soul to externalize the source of pain, to point a finger at the very structure meant to guide us back to the Father.
But as faithful disciples, we must approach this critique with the rigor of scripture study and the clarity of the Spirit. To suggest that the divine law or the restored gospel is inherently flawed is to fundamentally misunderstand the nature of truth itself. The Law, whether it be the Mosaic Law or the covenants taught through the Restoration, was not given for man to fail, but for man to be purified and led back to Christ. The error, therefore, is rarely in the divine source, but in the human reception.
The Trap of Externalizing Fault
The Savior Himself, and the prophets who followed, constantly taught that the issue was never the commandments, but the hearts of men. Consider the analogy of the Pharisees, mentioned in the Lord’s own words. They followed the Law of Moses—a law given by the Savior as Jehovah. Yet, their downfall was not the Law itself. It was their incorrect application of it, their pride, and their inability to recognize the Son of God when He stood among them. The Law was perfect; the men were not.
This principle is paramount for us today. We live in a covenant-filled era, one where the priesthood and the ordinances have been meticulously restored. The doctrines and covenants we profess—the eternal nature of the family, the necessity of temple covenants, the authority of the prophets—are divinely appointed. To argue that these truths are the source of the world’s discord is to confuse the vessel with the wine, or the divine plan with man’s own flawed understanding of that plan.
Recognizing the Source of the Problem
The truth remains: the laws and covenants we follow have been given by our Heavenly Father. The problem is not the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Problems arise when there is an incorrect application, an insufficient understanding, or a willful disregard of the divine pattern. The gospel has, and continues to have, created devoted disciples, apostles, and prophets—individuals who know the Savior and will recognize Him when they see Him again, because they will be like Him.
This understanding is not merely theological academic exercise; it is foundational to our discipleship. It demands that we be diligent students of our own covenants, that we test our assumptions against the established wisdom of the prophets, and that we recognize the difference between the divine structure and the human tendency toward cynicism or rebellion.
As we continue the work of Operation Iron Rod, our focus must remain anchored in the bedrock of scripture and the authority of the living prophet. We cannot allow the cacophony of outside criticism to distract us from the solemn, sacred work of preparing the way. Our mission is to teach the true doctrine, not merely react to the criticism.
A Call to Deeper Study
I invite you to revisit the accounts of the Pharisees and the Scribes, not just as historical footnotes, but as doctrinal warnings. What does the Lord teach us about the difference between observing the letter of the law and embodying the spirit of the law? Consider the teachings of the early Apostles in Acts 15 and the Book of Mormon accounts of the Nephites’ covenant keeping. Let these passages guide your private study this week. The Spirit will illuminate the distinction between the lawgiver and the law-breaker.
We must be the generation that understands this profound truth: the gospel is perfect; the application of it is our sacred, ongoing responsibility.
