The Lord's Battalion: Guiding the Next Generation on the Covenant Path

Sometimes, when we’re deep in the trenches of the field, or wrestling with a challenging question during missionary discussions, it feels like the work is all about the immediate needs—the needs of the investigator standing right in front of us. But today, my heart was lifted by a message that reminded me that the work is bigger than any single moment; it’s a continuous, generational effort.

It was a privilege to watch the recent introduction to the Children and Youth initiative. If you’ve been out in the field, or perhaps you're a parent or leader, you know that the stewardship of the young is sacred. It’s not just about programs; it’s about the Spirit whispering guidance into the hearts of the rising generation.

What struck me most was the consistent theme: the invitation to counsel with the Lord. It wasn't about a checklist of assignments, but about personal revelation and balanced growth—wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man. That scripture, Luke 2:52, is a constant beacon for all of us, whether we are in the MTC, serving as companions, or simply trying to be better disciples at home.

For us as returned missionaries, this is a powerful call to action. We are the link between the vision of the Brethren and the reality of the next cohort of disciples. We are meant to be mentors, to point our investigators, and even our fellow members, back to the covenant path. We can’t let the excitement of our own service blind us to the foundational work happening with our children and youth.

Agency and the Spirit: A Message for All Ages

President Nelson’s message was clear: the Lord is inviting *everyone* to join the Lord's battalion to help gather Israel. And for us, that means embracing the reality that we must help the young exercise their own agency. It’s a delicate balance—to love, encourage, and counsel so deeply that we don't inadvertently take over for them. We have to trust the Spirit, and trust the parents and leaders who are right there with them.

This resonates so deeply with the life of a disciple. Whether you are a seasoned missionary, a parent, or a lifelong student of the gospel, the work requires us to be perpetual students.
