The Miracle in the Mundane: Finding the Divine in the Everyday
Sometimes we look for the miraculous in the extraordinary, forgetting that the greatest wonders are right here in the ordinary realities of our lives.
When we talk about the Savior, or even when we discuss the covenants we make in our lives, our minds often leap to the grand, the unbelievable, the truly *extraordinary*. We think of the temple covenants, the power of the Spirit in a challenging ward meeting, or the sheer miracle of a conversion experience. These are wonderful things, and we should never downplay them.
But if you’ve been in the field, or if you’ve been studying the scriptures with your companions, you know that the real, sustaining power of the Gospel isn't always found in the dramatic spectacle. It's found in the *ordinary*.
I was reflecting recently on a talk by Elder Corbridge, and it really struck me. We are so conditioned to look for the "wow" factor—the water walking, the plates, the raising of the dead. We treat the miracles of the past as if they are somehow more phenomenal than the reality of breathing right now, or the simple act of reading a scripture passage that helps us understand a difficult doctrine.
The Greatest Wonder Is What Already Is
Elder Corbridge reminds us that the most phenomenal occurrences of all time and eternity are the most common. Think about it. The existence of the hand, the ability to see with our eyes, the fact that we are conscious beings capable of pondering eternal truths—these are the miracles we often overlook!
When we get deep into missionary preparation, we spend so much time preparing for the *next* big event: the visit, the talk, the invitation. It's easy to feel like our current efforts aren't "amazing" enough. But the Lord isn't asking for a spectacular performance; He's asking us to simply *be* present disciples. He's asking us to see the divine potential in the everyday.
Being Christlike in the Ordinary
This concept is so vital for us as rogue disciples, whether we are in our first few weeks of temple recommends or decades into building Zion in our local community. We can’t wait for a perfect moment or a perfect setting to live the Gospel. We have to find the Savior in the mundane.
If we are struggling with uncertainty—and we all are, sometimes when we’re trying to answer those hard questions in a missionary discussion—it’s tempting to get paralyzed by the unknown. But the message is: Trust the process. Trust the Spirit that guides you through the day-to-day.
This is where I want to point you toward something practical for our internet missionary efforts. When you feel that dip in conviction, don't wait for a big revelation. Instead, focus on the small, manageable things. Can you find a scripture passage today that illuminates a truth you’ve been wrestling with? Can you share a simple, genuine testimony with a neighbor? That is the work. That is the miracle.
A Small Challenge for Our Disciples
To help us keep this focus sharp, I’d like to invite you to join our weekly Disciple Challenge. This week, let’s focus on noticing the "ordinary miracles." I challenge you to write down three things you experienced today—three things that simply *are*—and write a sentence about how those things testify of the Creator. It’s a simple exercise, but it shifts the lens of our hearts.
For those who love diving deep into doctrine, I highly recommend revisiting the teachings on the nature of eternal life through the Iron Rod. You can find some excellent foundational material in LivingBook that helps frame these big concepts using the language of the restored Gospel.
If you want to discuss how to take these principles into your personal study, remember that HolyPlaces has fantastic Book Club groups forming. It's a wonderful way to study scripture with others, guided by the Spirit.
Remember, every member can be an internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Let's keep looking for the wonder right where our feet are planted.
