The Perfect Timing of the Lord: Surrender and the Iron Rod

When trials linger and progress seems delayed, it's easy to question the Lord's plan. But remembering His perfect timing – a timing that cannot be late – requires a profound act of faith and a steadfast reliance on the iron rod.

How often do we find ourselves chafing at what feels like a delay? A calling deferred, a blessing withheld, a promised land seemingly out of reach? The frustration is understandable. We labor, we pray, we strive – and the expected outcome tarries. It’s tempting to assume a flaw in the system, a miscalculation on our part, or even a failure on the part of the Lord. But what if the very perception of delay is a distortion of our mortal perspective?

The sentiment shared in this recent discourse resonated deeply: it’s not a delay if it’s God’s timing.

God's Timing is Perfection

Consider the nature of perfection. Imperfection implies error, tardiness, a need for correction. Can we truly ascribe such characteristics to Deity? Surely not. As Moroni taught, “Charity never faileth; wherefore, it must endure forever. How that no man can know the manifestations of the Spirit save by the Spirit” (Moroni 7:40). To suggest the Lord is ever “late” is to diminish the very essence of His being. It's to introduce a worldly standard of punctuality into a realm governed by eternal principles.

The prophet Isaiah, speaking as a prophet of the Lord, declared, “For I know their works and their thoughts: that they return again to their own nation, as a bow returns unto the archer” (Isaiah 57:9). This imagery speaks of a divine purpose, a trajectory ordained by a power infinitely beyond our comprehension. What we perceive as a deviation, a setback, is often a necessary bend in the bow, ensuring a more powerful and precise release.

Walking by Faith

The call to “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7) isn’t merely a comforting platitude; it’s a commandment demanding diligent obedience. It requires a conscious effort to resist the siren song of natural reasoning and to anchor ourselves firmly to the iron rod of revelation (1 Nephi 15:24). The Spirit witnesses of truth, even when our circumstances scream otherwise. To doubt that witness, to succumb to despair, is to sever our connection to the source of all understanding.

Think of Enoch and the City of Zion. The Lord’s timing for its ultimate translation differed vastly from Enoch’s fervent desire. Did Enoch question God’s plan? We are told that he “walked with God, and was translated” (Moses 4:31). His unwavering faith allowed him to transcend the limitations of mortal understanding and to accept the Lord’s purpose, even when it remained veiled.

Temple Covenants and Divine Timing

The covenants we make within temple walls further illuminate this principle. We promise to keep the commandments, to magnify our callings, and to endure to the end. These promises often carry with them a seemingly indefinite waiting period – a time of preparation, refinement, and unwavering faithfulness. The blessings we seek are real, but their fulfillment is contingent upon our adherence to the Lord’s timing, not our own.

President Russell M. Nelson has repeatedly urged us to be steadfast and patient, reminding us that the Lord’s work moves forward according to His own counsel (D&C 88:30). This isn't a passive acceptance of stagnation; it’s an active participation in a divine process, trusting that the Lord’s purpose will ultimately prevail.

Let us, therefore, cultivate a spirit of surrender, a willingness to relinquish our own timelines and to embrace the perfect timing of the Lord. Let us strengthen our grip on the iron rod, seeking guidance and confirmation through prayer and scripture study. And let us remember that even when it feels like “last minute,” it is still on time, according to the Lord’s eternal plan.

What areas in your life are you struggling to surrender to the Lord’s timing? Consider a specific scripture passage related to patience and faith. Ponder how the principles outlined in this post apply to your personal experience. Share your reflections with a trusted friend or mentor.
