The Peril of Rationalizing the Command: Heeding the Lord's Watchmen

The parable of the olive trees challenges us to examine where our doubts originate, lest we sacrifice the sure protection of divine command for the fleeting counsel of man.

There is a dangerous temptation, especially in the digital age, to treat the commandments of God as items open to endless scholarly debate. We are taught to question, to ponder, and to study the scriptures—all vital disciplines. But there is a crucial distinction between the divinely mandated pursuit of understanding and the human tendency toward rationalizing away the very things the Lord has commanded us to believe or do.

The Spirit, as we know, does not whisper a single, easily digestible answer; He guides us to the necessary conviction. Yet, when we find ourselves in a place of doctrinal ambiguity, it is far too easy to gather our brethren, form a consensus, and quietly convince ourselves that the weight of the Lord’s instruction is too heavy, or perhaps, simply inconvenient.

The Counsel of Men vs. The Command of the Lord

The Parable of the Noblemen in the Olive Trees, though ancient, speaks with a profound clarity to the Latter-day Saint heart. We are commanded to build a tower, not merely to observe the trees, but to establish a steadfast, divinely protected center from which the Watchmen can see the approaching peril. The servants, in this narrative, did not fail because they lacked intelligence or effort; they failed because they began to question the *necessity* of the command itself. They argued, they rationalized, they formed a consensus that undermined the clear instruction given by the Lord.

The tragedy was not the enemy's arrival, but the internal, corrosive decision to disregard the clear word. As the transcript points out, they were “at variance one with another”—a failure of unified testimony, a spiritual entropy that allowed the enemy to sweep through their efforts.

Guardianship of the Covenants

For us, the covenant keepers of the Restoration, this parable is a sharp warning. Our covenants are not suggestions; they are sacred, life-altering commitments made in the presence of the divine. To treat a commandment—be it regarding temple attendance, the keeping of the Sabbath, or adherence to the living prophet—as merely one point of debate is to invite the very kind of doctrinal slothfulness the Lord warns against.

The challenge is not to blindly follow, but to follow *with perfect knowledge* of the Lord's hand. When the Spirit prompts us, we must resist the urge to seek validation from the secular world, or even from a subset of our own community, that tells us, “It’s okay to ignore this particular command.” Such counsel, however well-intentioned, is the spiritual equivalent of building a hedge around the olive trees only to find the foundation crumbling because the laborers argued over the blueprints.

A Scholarly Discipleship of Obedience

We are scholars, students of the deepest doctrines of God. We know that true knowledge culminates not in intellectual assent, but in obedient action. Doctrine and covenants are not merely theories to be debated in an academic forum; they are covenants to be lived. Our commitment to the restored priesthood and the ongoing direction of the Prophet is the very Watchman’s Tower that protects us.

If we find ourselves questioning a principle that has been established by the Prophet, or questioning the established pattern of the Church, we must pause. We must ask: Am I questioning the Lord's word, or am I struggling to align my current understanding with the fullness of the truth that the Spirit is revealing? The difference is everything.

The enemy thrives in the vacuum created by doubt. He does not attack the covenants directly; he whispers into the space between our commandments, convincing us that the burden is too great, or the path too narrow. Our defense is simple: consistent, unquestioning obedience to the revealed word.

This sacred work requires us to remain diligent in our personal study. Do not let the consensus of the crowd, or the fleeting commentary of social media, replace the direct, persistent promptings of the Spirit. Let us trust the Watchmen on the Tower—the prophets and apostles—who know the Lord's plan and who are called to guide us through the encroaching night. Obedience, even when costly, is never a sacrifice; it is the sure protection of the covenant path.

Fellow disciples, let us commit to being the builders who trust the original command, recognizing that the foundation of our eternal safety is built upon the unwavering fidelity to the covenant path.

A Prompt for Deeper Study: Consider the phrase, “hearken not unto the commandments of their lord.” What specific areas of your life do you find yourself rationalizing away from a clear, established commandment of the Lord? Write your reflections, and submit them for private review. Let us use our combined efforts to strengthen the training corpus and further build the global ministry.

Frequently Asked Questions

The difference lies in the intent. Questioning the Lord's command suggests a doubt in its necessity or divine origin, which is dangerous. Questioning is part of the scholarly process of seeking deeper understanding, but it must always be done with the ultimate goal of greater obedience.

They stopped because they began to question the necessity of the command among themselves, leading them to conclude that the tower was not needed, thereby abandoning the divinely assigned task.
