The Perilous Fringes: Guarding the Testimony
The Brethren have repeatedly warned of a subtle danger – the insidious erosion of testimony through exposure to faithless influences. This post explores the importance of seeking the center, heeding counsel, and recognizing the spiritual larceny that threatens our individual and collective faith.
The air crackles with a quiet urgency these days. It isn’t the clamor of overt opposition, but a more insidious whisper, a subtle drift away from the bedrock of truth. We’ve all felt it – that unsettling feeling when a conversation veers into unproductive speculation, when doubt is entertained as a valid perspective, when the sweet nourishment of the gospel is replaced with the bitter fruit of uncertainty. Elder [source video speaker]’s counsel rings with particular clarity in this season: seek the safety of the center.
What constitutes the “center”? It isn’t a static point on a map, but a dynamic state of alignment – alignment with the prophets and apostles, alignment with the restored gospel as taught in the scriptures and reinforced by the Spirit. It's found in diligent study of the word of God, in faithful adherence to covenants, and in the unwavering fellowship of the Saints. To wander the fringes, to engage with those who actively seek to dismantle the foundation of our faith, is to invite a spiritual vulnerability we cannot afford.
The language used – “loss larceny,” “stripping people of their precious testimonies” – is stark, and intentionally so. This is not hyperbole; it is a diagnosis of a profound spiritual sickness. Consider the parable of the tares in Matthew 13:24-30. The sower sows the good seed (the gospel), but an enemy (the Adversary) sows tares amongst it. The diligent servant is not to pull them up immediately, lest the roots be damaged, but to allow them to be gathered at harvest time. This requires discernment, patience, and a deep understanding of the principles at play. To err on the side of indulgence, to tolerate the presence of destructive influences under the guise of tolerance or understanding, is to risk the entire field being choked.
Counsel from our leaders is not a suggestion; it is a lifeline. To actively resist this counsel, to prioritize the opinions of those who undermine the principles of the Restoration, is to invite a spiritual emptiness far more profound than any temporary discomfort. We are commanded to “hear the prophets and apostles” (D&C 1:14). To do so is to actively participate in our own spiritual preservation.
Think of the iron rod in Lehi’s dream (1 Nephi 11:21-23). It is a symbol of the word of God, held firmly in the hands of the prophets. Those who grasp the rod are led safely through the darkness, while those who do not are lost in the mist. To deliberately release our grip on the iron rod, to allow ourselves to be swayed by the voices of those who reject it, is to forfeit our pathway to eternal life.
The dream of a night vision, as referenced in the video, speaks to the fragility of revelation. A fleeting, insubstantial dream is not a substitute for the concrete reality of the gospel. Similarly, a superficial understanding of faith, easily swayed by worldly philosophies, is no protection against the forces of darkness. The steadfastness of our testimonies demands a commitment to truth that transcends intellectual curiosity and embraces spiritual obedience.
Let us examine our own hearts and actions. Are we actively seeking the safety of the center? Are we heeding the counsel of the Brethren? Are we protecting our testimonies from those who would steal them away? The stakes are eternal.
