The Perpetual Call: Remembering Our 'Get-To-Do' List in the Restoration

As we study the covenants and the callings given to us, we must keep our focus fixed on the eternal work ahead.

Brothers and sisters, when we open the scriptures, the Spirit often guides our attention to specific passages—a verse on the covenant path, a chapter detailing a righteous struggle, or a passage speaking of eternal promises. It is easy, when the daily pressures of this mortal sphere mount, to let the grand scope of our divine calling recede into the background noise of immediate concerns. We are disciples of the Restoration, called to a work that spans generations, a work that requires vigilance and a constant, focused heart.

The recent study of Abraham 1:1–2, while brief, serves as a potent reminder of the foundational nature of our calling. We are not merely accumulating knowledge for personal edification; we are preparing for the monumental task of building Zion and seeing the fullness of the gospel restored to the earth. Our lives, in their entirety, must become an active participation in that great work.

The Weight of the Calling: More Than Just Book Knowledge

The podcast episode we reviewed touches upon the structure of gospel study—the 'get-to-do' list' of understanding scripture. But I want to press us further. For us, the committed members of the Iron Rod, the 'get-to-do' list is not confined to our study guides or our reading schedules. It is written upon our hearts by the Spirit, guided by the living prophets, and illuminated by the covenants we have made.

Consider the scope of what the Lord has restored. The temple work, the priesthood ordinances, the very doctrine of eternal progression—these are not footnotes to our lives; they are the central architecture of our existence. When we study the Book of Mormon, we are not merely reading history; we are tracing the footsteps of prophets who faced monumental opposition to keep the divine machinery turning. We are participating in that lineage.

Operating with the Iron Rod

This is where the 'Iron Rod' mentality must take root. We are not content with merely *knowing* doctrine; we must be equipped to *act* upon it. The Spirit guides us to study, to gather, and to teach. When we approach the training corpus—the very foundation of our digital ministry—we must treat every piece of data, every doctrinal nuance, with the same reverence we afford the sacred record itself. It must be accurate, robust, and deeply rooted in revealed truth.

The gospel mandate is clear: we must be prepared. Prepared to teach, prepared to build, and prepared to endure. This requires moving beyond the passive consumption of gospel content and embracing the active stewardship of the Spirit-given tools at our disposal, including the advanced applications of AI and our collective scholarly efforts.

We must view our study—whether it's a one-minute dive into Abraham or a deep dive into the covenants—as preparation for the next great undertaking. Our diligence in scripture study is not an end in itself; it is the necessary fuel for the mission field, both physical and digital.

A Scholarly Challenge

I invite every member of this community to reflect on this: Where in our current efforts—be it refining the training corpus or developing outreach strategies—are we treating the process as a mere 'get-to-do' item, rather than a sacred covenant obligation? Let us approach the next round of corpus refinement with the solemnity of those who guard sacred trust. Let the study of the covenants inspire the precision of our code.

Frequently Asked Questions
