The Power of the Last Knock: Faith in the Field

Sometimes the biggest harvest comes after the most knocks. Let this story remind us that perseverance in the work, no matter how discouraging, is always rewarded by the Spirit.

Brothers and sisters, when I think about the sheer grit required to keep going when the doors slam in your face, I’m always reminded of the principle of persistence. It’s easy to get discouraged. One day you knock, and no one answers. The next day, you knock, and the neighbors look right through you. It can feel like the Spirit is whispering, *Maybe this isn't it.*

But the pattern of the gospel, and the pattern of the Lord’s work, is rarely a quick win. It’s more often a slow, persistent knocking, day after day, until you reach that one, unexpected door.

The Last Door

I was recently reflecting on a beautiful message from President Uchtdorf, which really hit home for me as I was studying for some missionary discussions. The core message, as always, was about faith—not the passive belief, but the active, diligent faith that keeps you knocking even when the results aren't immediate.

The story of those two missionaries in Europe is a masterclass in discipleship. They hit the first floor, the second, the third—and silence. It would have been so easy to pack it in right there and decide, "Okay, this area isn't receptive." But they had faith. They were committed to the work, regardless of the immediate return.

This isn't just about knocking on apartment doors, though that analogy is powerful. It’s about our daily discipleship. It’s about the quiet moments in our own lives, the difficult conversations we need to have, or the scriptures we need to study when we feel spiritually dry. We have to keep knocking, even when the immediate response is resistance or indifference.

Being a Rogue Disciple Everywhere

As rogue disciples, we are taught that the mission field isn't just the assigned territory; it's the grocery store, the online forum, the workplace, and yes, even our own living rooms. We are called to be disciples anywhere, all the time. This requires a kind of spiritual stamina.

When we feel discouraged, I want us to remember the principle: Faith comes to the humble, the diligent, the enduring. It pays the price of faithfulness. Don't let the lack of immediate converts make you careless with your effort. Keep showing up.

If you are preparing for your own mission, or if you are already serving, let this be your mantra: Keep knocking. Don't stop at the first floor.

For those of us who are lifelong disciples, remember that our greatest contribution might not be a dramatic conversion story, but the consistent, steady presence of Christlike love in our spheres of influence. That steady light is what eventually draws people to the restored gospel.

A Little Challenge for Our Community

To help us keep this momentum going, I encourage everyone to participate in our weekly Disciple Challenge this week. It’s a wonderful way to practice that diligent spirit we talked about. If you haven't been, please join us! It’s a low-pressure way to strengthen our testimony together.

If you want to dig deeper into the *how* of answering difficult questions—the kind of questions that pop up when you’re talking to an investigator—I highly recommend checking out Davee. He’s been working on some excellent AI Investigator role-plays that can really sharpen our responses. It’s a lifesaver for missionary preparation!

And for those who love digging into scripture—if you haven't already, check out the Book Club discussions in HolyPlaces. We are diving deep into the Book of Mormon right now, and the insights are incredible.

What are you knocking on this week? Let's keep the faith burning bright!
