The Power of the 'Siloam' Moment: Seeing the Light After the Darkest Night

Brothers and sisters, have you ever been in a place where the darkness felt absolute? A darkness so thick you couldn't see the path ahead, the next step, or even the faces of those you love? I remember a time in my own missionary days—it felt like the spiritual equivalent of being born blind. I was earnest, I was prepared, I was studying until my eyes burned, but when I finally stepped into the field, the reality of the task felt overwhelming. I thought I had the knowledge, the scriptures memorized, the best missionary discussion answers ready, but I felt utterly dependent on something outside my own preparation.

It’s easy, when we’re deep in the process of missionary preparation, or even when we’re seasoned returned missionaries, to think that *we* are the light. We feel like we have to *do* all the work. But the Savior’s testimony, and what I’ve learned since returning, is that the power isn't in the mud, or the saliva, or even the perfect testimony. The power is in the direction He points us.

The account of the man at the Pool of Siloam is such a profound illustration of discipleship. Jesus doesn't just *give* him sight; He gives him an instruction: "Go and wash your face in the pool of Siloam."

The Siloam Principle: Following the Direction

What does that name mean? Ascend. To rise up. To move toward something higher. For us, as disciples of Jesus Christ, that's the lesson. We can do so much preparation—we can study the Book of Mormon until we can recite it in our sleep; we can perfect our talk tracks; we can even get excellent coaching from our district leaders. That preparation is vital. It’s the mud, the anointing. But if we stay standing right where we are, no matter how much we know, we won't see the miracle.

The miracle happens when we obey the directive. We have to *go* to the pool. We have to take the action, however simple or seemingly insignificant it might be. Sometimes, our spiritual "Siloam" is simply showing up—showing up to the weekly Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces, showing up to the temple, or even just showing up to the challenging conversations we have with our friends who are questioning the plan.
