The Power of the Unscripted Moment: Finding the Spirit in the Everyday

Sometimes the most profound testimonies and lessons come when we aren't prepared, just like the Savior breaking bread with His followers.

It’s funny, isn't it? We spend so much time preparing. We study for missionary discussions, we memorize talks for our own comfort, and we even plan out our social scripture study highlights. We get used to the structure—the expected questions, the anticipated answers. We build up these beautiful scaffolds of knowledge, hoping they will hold us steady when we step into the field.

But sometimes, the Spirit shows up when the script is completely gone. It happens when you’re not trying to *do* the work, but when you’re just *being* with the Lord.

I was reflecting this week on some conversations I watched recently—conversations that, while steeped in family life, touched on something eternally true: the power of the unscripted moment. The speakers were talking about everything from health journeys to the promise of a New Earth, and at times, it felt less like a planned discussion and more like the Lord gently guiding a conversation.

It reminded me so much of the Savior. Think about the accounts of the early Church. After the Resurrection, what was the first thing He did? He didn't give a rousing, perfectly worded doctrinal lecture. He gathered His disciples, and He broke bread. He was present, tangible, and utterly real. That simple act of fellowship and communion was the greatest teaching moment.

As we all strive to be better disciples—whether we’re in the MTC, serving a mission, or just having a quiet moment studying in our own living rooms—we sometimes get caught up in the *performance* of discipleship. We worry if our testimony is polished enough, if our answers are doctrinally airtight enough to pass any investigator challenge.

But the Spirit doesn't operate on a schedule or a perfect talking point. It thrives in the messy, unscripted space. It’s in the genuine concern for a friend going through trials, like the discussions about Mia’s health, or in the shared laughter over a silly memory. It’s in the moments where you realize you don't know the perfect answer, but you know the perfect *source* for the answer.

This is the beautiful challenge of being an internet missionary today. We aren't always standing on a corner with a tract; sometimes, we are on a podcast, or in a Book Club, or even just talking with a neighbor. Our job is to be present, to be unashamed of our faith, and to let the Spirit guide the conversation, even if we feel a little awkward or unprepared.

If you’re feeling the pressure to always have the next big answer, I want to leave you with this thought: Sometimes, the best thing you can do for the work is to simply *listen*, to be humble enough to let the Spirit lead you to the next question, or even the next shared cup of tea.

For those of you who are preparing for the field, remember that your greatest preparation isn't just in your knowledge, but in your willingness to be wonderfully, imperfectly present. For those of us who are already returned missionaries, remember to take time to just *be* with your companions, not just to *teach* them.

If you want to practice navigating those tricky, unscripted moments, I highly recommend revisiting the tools in LivingBook.
