The Psalmist's Riches: Finding Joy in God's Testimony

We are familiar with striving for earthly blessings, but do we truly understand the profound joy that comes from immersing ourselves in the word of God? A recent podcast reminded us of the Psalmist's delight in God’s testimonies, a joy exceeding that of riches – a perspective desperately needed in our age.

The pursuit of temporal wealth consumes so much of modern effort. We chase promotions, investments, and possessions, believing that increased security and comfort will bring lasting happiness. Yet, how often do we pause to consider the true riches – the treasures found within the pages of scripture? The Psalmist, in his profound wisdom, declares that he finds greater delight in God’s testimonies than in riches (Psalm 19:10). This isn’t a mere poetic sentiment; it's a declaration of a fundamental truth about the human heart and its proper orientation.

Consider the context. The Psalmist is speaking of God's law, His precepts, His word. These are not burdens to be endured, but sources of immense joy and understanding. They illuminate the path, reveal the character of God, and offer a profound connection to the divine. To truly internalize this perspective requires a shift in priorities, a deliberate cultivation of a love for the word that eclipses the allure of worldly possessions. It's a choice, a commitment to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

This echoes the teachings of the Restoration. The prophets have consistently emphasized the importance of diligent scripture study. From the early revelations in the Book of Mormon, where Nephi declares, “For I cannot say that I have all things,” but “I have seen the things of God, and I know that they are” (1 Nephi 11:27), to the counsel of modern apostles urging us to “feast upon the words of Christ” (2 Nephi 8:5), the call to immerse ourselves in the word is unwavering.

The Brethren have spoken repeatedly of the power of the scriptures to guide us, protect us, and strengthen us in times of trial. They are a beacon of light in a world shrouded in darkness, a source of comfort and hope when faced with adversity. To neglect this source is to deprive ourselves of a vital sustenance, to weaken our spiritual defenses against the forces of evil.

The podcast episode, reminding us of this principle, serves as a potent challenge. It’s easy to get caught up in the noise and distractions of the world, to allow our minds to be filled with fleeting and often superficial pursuits. But true joy, lasting peace, and a profound sense of purpose are found only in the word of God.

How do we cultivate this “rejoicing” in God’s word? It requires more than a cursory reading. It demands careful study, prayerful reflection, and a sincere desire to understand and apply its principles. It necessitates a willingness to confront our own biases and preconceived notions, to allow the Spirit to guide us to a deeper understanding. It is a lifelong pursuit, a journey of continual revelation.

Consider the parable of the laborers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16). Those who came later, yet received the same reward, remind us that even diligent effort in the latter days can yield great blessings. But the consistent, ongoing effort – the daily feasting – is what builds the foundation for eternal joy.

Let us examine our hearts, and ask ourselves: Do we truly rejoice in God’s testimonies? Are we prioritizing the pursuit of earthly riches over the treasures that truly matter? May we strive to emulate the Psalmist’s example, finding our greatest joy in the word of God.

Let us ponder this prompt: What single verse or passage of scripture has brought you the greatest comfort or insight recently? Share it with a fellow Latter-day Saint and discuss its meaning.
