The Question That Changes Everything: Finding Eternal Life Today

Sometimes the hardest questions aren't the ones we ask, but the ones we are forced to confront about what truly sustains us.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever been in a conversation where the stakes felt impossibly high? Where the very definition of a good life, a righteous life, hung in the balance? It reminds me of something I was pondering the other day, watching a deep dive into the Gospel of Luke. It centers on a man—a lawyer, an expert in the Law—who approaches Jesus with the most fundamental question any soul can ask: “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

It’s a question that echoes down the centuries, isn't it? It’s the question we all face, whether we’re standing in a missionary discussion, wrestling with a tough scripture passage in a Book Club, or just sitting quietly with the Spirit in our own living rooms. We all feel that gnawing awareness of how much we fall short.

The lawyer was prepared. He knew the Law inside and out. He was educated, steeped in tradition. He thought he had the formula. But Jesus didn't give him a chapter and verse to memorize. He redirected him. He asked, “What is written in the law?”

When we hear that, it can feel like a slight, almost an intellectual challenge. But I want us to look at it through the lens of sincere seeking. This man wasn't trying to trap Jesus; he was genuinely desperate for an answer to a life-defining problem. He needed assurance. He needed the path.

The Shift from Law to Love

The beautiful thing, the revolutionary part, is what follows. After the lawyer correctly quoted the great commandments—loving God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and loving our neighbor as ourselves—Jesus confirms it: “Do this and you will live.”

Think about that for a moment. The answer wasn't found in mastering the minutiae of the Mosaic code, though that knowledge was valuable. The answer wasn't found in perfect adherence to rules. The answer was encapsulated in a single, profound principle: Love. Love for God, and love for our neighbor.

This is the core of the gospel, isn't it? It’s not a set of performance metrics we check off. It’s a disposition of the heart. It’s a quality of life—a state of grace that begins *now*, not some distant reward after death.

As we continue in our discipleship, whether we are preparing for the field, serving in our local wards, or simply engaging in our daily lives as Internet missionaries, we are constantly being asked this same question, directly or indirectly. How do I live? How do I find *that* life?

It’s humbling, isn't it? To realize that the most profound truths are often distilled down to the simplest, most powerful commandments. It requires us to move beyond merely *knowing* the gospel to actively *living* it—to let that love compel us to serve, to forgive, and to see the Savior in everyone we meet.

“Eternal life begins now.”

This week, as you engage with the material—perhaps diving into the scriptures via a Book Club, or even just reflecting on the insights shared in the Social Scripture Study feed—I invite you to keep that lawyer’s question at the forefront. What is the *action* required of me today to live that life? What is the *love* I need to extend?

If you want to wrestle with this concept further, I highly recommend revisiting the teachings on the commandments. For those of us who are seasoned returned missionaries, remember that the principles learned in the MTC and the field don't expire. They are the foundation for every interaction. And for all of us, the work is ongoing. We are called to be disciples everywhere, all the time.

If you haven't already, take some time this week to review the insights from the video on Luke 10. It’s a powerful reminder that the law points to the Savior, and the Savior *is* the fulfillment of the law.

He was an expert in the law of Moses, or a scribe, who approached Jesus seeking to know what actions were required to inherit eternal life.
