It is easy to mistake the celebration of culture for the essence of the calling. We can be captivated by the memories, the academic achievements, and the beautiful ceremonies that mark a milestone. Yet, when we read the transcript of commencement addresses, the true, enduring doctrinal weight often rests not on the accolades, but on the revelation of structure.

In reviewing the recent commencement address from BYU–Hawaii, one cannot help but be struck by a specific point of emphasis—a point that transcends the university setting and speaks directly to the very mechanics of the Restoration. The speaker notes a "unique distinction" of that institution: its Board of Trustees is led by prophets, seers, and revelators.

This observation, while seemingly confined to institutional governance, serves as a profound doctrinal touchstone for us who dedicate ourselves to the study of the covenants and the perpetual guidance of the Lord's appointed servants. When the speaker stated, "we know with perfect assurance that BYU Hawaii's success and your blessing is directly tied to aligning with them because and this really matters because by aligning with them we are aligning with the Savior," the message shifted from institutional pride to eternal covenant law.

The Architecture of Divine Direction

For us, who are called to walk the Iron Rod, this distinction is not merely an administrative detail; it is a principle of discipleship. The Lord has established a mechanism of divine guidance that requires the active participation and obedience of His children. We are taught through the scriptures, from the Book of Mormon to the Doctrine and Covenants, that the prophets are the voice of the Lord, and that the covenants we make are contingent upon our willingness to follow their direction.

Consider the foundational principle taught throughout General Conference: the necessity of aligning our personal lives, our study, and our service with the counsel of the current prophet and apostles. This is the ultimate expression of the temple covenant—a covenant of continuous, obedient alignment.

Beyond Academia: The Covenantal Mindset

While universities are invaluable centers for knowledge, they are not inherently divine sources of truth. The speaker correctly identifies that the true measure of success at BYU-Hawaii is not just the mangoes or the degrees, but the spiritual alignment—the "laser focus" on the prophetic counsel. This reminds us that our scholarly pursuits, our deepest studies of the Restoration, and our understanding of the Priesthood must always be anchored to the current, living word of revelation.
