The Spirit's Whisper: Keeping the Center on the Savior

Sometimes, when we’re deep in the work, or even when we’re just having a quiet moment of study in the temple, it can feel overwhelming. We look at the sheer scope of what the Savior accomplished—the Garden, the Cross, the Resurrection—and we can feel this profound sense of awe. It’s a feeling that makes you stop and think, "How can I even begin to explain this?"

It reminds me of a conversation I had recently with a fellow disciple who was preparing for a mission. He was struggling with how to articulate the depth of the Atonement to an investigator who seemed knowledgeable about other faiths, but who still looked slightly detached. He was worried his words wouldn't measure up.

It hit me then, echoing what I heard from Sheri L. Dew speaking years ago. She spoke about how even the most spiritually gifted among us don't always have the words to fully communicate who the Savior is and what He did for us. She pointed us back to the ultimate teacher: the Holy Ghost. The Spirit can bear witness with such clarity and power that we know, without question, that Jesus Christ is our Savior.

This isn't just something for the mission field, though the Spirit is certainly vital there. This is for us, right here, right now, as we become internet missionaries in our own homes and workplaces. We are called to be disciples everywhere, all the time. Our mission prep isn't just about memorizing scripture accounts; it's about cultivating a deep, abiding feeling of the Spirit's witness.

The Danger of Complacency

Sheri touched on how sometimes, even within our own culture, we can become desensitized to the magnitude of the Savior's sacrifice. She shared a story about noticing how others seemed less engaged in the observance of the sacred week. It’s a gentle, yet necessary, wake-up call for all of us. We can get so caught up in the day-to-day—the comps, the transfers, the busy schedule of being a returned missionary—that we forget to heighten our awareness of what we are celebrating!

The fundamental principles, as Joseph Smith taught, are anchored in the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets concerning Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension. Everything else is appendage. That’s our anchor point.
