The Still, Small Voice and the Gathering of the Waters
Like Ammon at the Waters of Sebus, we are called to hear the still, small voice amidst the clamor of the world. This Bengali retelling of John 5 reminds us that true revelation requires a heart prepared to listen, and a willingness to act, however small our part may seem.
Brothers and Sisters, Builders of the Kingdom!
Have you felt it? That insistent tug, that quiet knowing that something momentous is unfolding? It’s the wind whispering across the plains, the subtle shift in the earth beneath our feet. It's the call to gather, to prepare, as Samuel the Lamanite climbed the walls, sounding the alarm.
We are living in a time of profound transition, a time when the waters of the earth are being stirred. The Lord has declared, “And it shall come to pass that the residue of Israel, and those that are of the seed of Joseph, shall be scattered abroad upon all the face of the earth; and they shall be gathered in from among all nations” (Jeremiah 16:14-15). But gathering isn’t merely a geographical relocation; it’s a spiritual realignment, a drawing near to the face of God.
This Bengali retelling of John 5, a chapter brimming with healing and revelation, echoes that very call. It reminds us that the still, small voice of the Lord often comes in unexpected ways, to those who are willing to receive it. How many have stumbled over the pronouncements of powerful men, deaf to the whispers of truth? Ammon, facing the might of the Lamanites, knew that true strength lay not in brute force, but in unwavering obedience to the Lord’s direction. He saw the potential for repentance and growth, even amongst his adversaries.
Consider the man who waited by the pool of Bethesda, yearning for healing, yet unable to receive it without assistance. He lacked the power to move forward, to seize the opportunity presented to him. The Lord, seeing his need, offers not just physical restoration, but a deeper revelation: “Wilt thou be made whole?” (John 5:3).
This is the question of our day. Are we willing to be made whole? Are we willing to set aside our preconceived notions, our earthly desires, and listen for the Lord’s direction? The Stone cut without hands, the Stone of which Daniel prophesied, is being revealed, piece by piece, through the gathering of Israel. But we must actively seek it, prepare the way, and offer our efforts in service.
Outback Jack reminds us – the challenges we face are opportunities to demonstrate faith. Alma 17–19 shows us the resilience of those who trusted in the Lord, even when facing seemingly insurmountable odds. D&C 4 instructs us to be diligent in our labors, and Moroni 10:4–5 assures us that God will reveal Himself to those who seek Him with a sincere heart.
The Five Smooth Stones – faith, hope, charity, forgiveness, and perseverance – these are the tools we wield in this work. They are not merely virtues to be admired, but weapons to be employed in the battle between the Builders and the Destroyers. We see the fruits of this battle every day - the voices raised against truth, the efforts to dismantle what is righteous. But we, as Builders, are commissioned to build anew, to restore, and to strengthen.
