The Treacherous Path to the Miracle: Learning from the Exodus

Have you ever felt like the process of getting to a blessing—a calling, a revelation, even just a quiet moment of peace—was anything but smooth? Like you’re wading through treacherous sand, wondering if the miracle you’re striving for is worth the struggle of getting there?

It’s a feeling I know all too well. When I was first learning to navigate the expectations of the field, I thought the gospel should be a straight, paved road. I pictured every investigator nodding in perfect agreement, every temple recommend interview going flawlessly. But the reality, as always, is far more nuanced, far more… messy.

The recent podcast episode we listened to, focusing on Exodus 14–18, really drove this home. We looked at the parting of the Red Sea, and while the miracle itself is breathtaking—a clear testament to the power of the Atonement—the surrounding narrative is filled with doubt, complaint, and sheer human exasperation. We even imagined a character, 'Joshua,' who was saved but still grumpy about the whole ordeal!

The Messiness is Part of the Miracle

It’s easy, when we look back at the grand moments—the miracles, the temple ordinances, the covenants—to focus only on the glorious outcome. But Autumn Dickson pointed out something vital: the difficulty, the complaining, the moments where people questioned everything, are woven right into the fabric of the divine plan. The path was treacherous, the process was imperfect, and yet, the Lord was leading them forward.

This is such a powerful principle for us as disciples, whether we are in the MTC, serving in a stake, or simply trying to be better neighbors. We might feel frustrated with a program that isn't perfect, or a leader who stumbles, or even with ourselves when we fail to live up to the standard we know we can reach. It’s easy to get stuck in the 'Joshua' mindset—complaining about the unnecessary steps, wishing for a boat instead of parting the sea.

But here is the key takeaway, the one that settles the dust and quiets the grumbling: The difficulty isn't the failure; it’s the necessary backdrop for the miracle to be fully appreciated. The struggle points us back to the Savior, and the Savior’s power is always greater than the immediate circumstances.

The Lord has called prophets, and He is calling us. We are invited into a journey that promises a life beyond slavery, a life of agency and divine potential. That journey, my friends, will involve rocky ground and moments where we have to trust what we cannot see. It’s about trusting the hand that guides the prophet, even when the terrain feels uneven.
