The True Measure of Care: Seeing Beyond the Bill

Sometimes the greatest acts of compassion are seen when the world is focused only on currency, reminding us where true discipleship lies.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever felt the weight of expectation—the weight of what something *should* cost? We hear stories, both in the temple and out in the field, that challenge our definitions of value. We get so good at talking about the eternal worth of a soul, the infinite gift of the Gospel, that sometimes we forget how those principles play out when the stakes feel incredibly real, when the money is flashing before our eyes, and the spirit seems to be hanging by a thread.

I was recently reflecting on a powerful piece of media that really stopped me in my tracks. It’s a stark reminder that the Savior’s care—the care of the Father, the care of the Prophet, the care of a companion—is never transactional. It is unconditional. It is pure grace.

The Spirit vs. The Cash Register

What struck me most in watching this was the stark contrast. On one side, you have the selfless devotion—the Master treating the orphaned children like his own, the genuine concern for life. On the other, you have the cold, calculating machinery of the modern system, where a diagnosis, a mere word, can instantly translate into a mountain of debt. It’s a jarring juxtaposition, isn't it?

It makes you pause and think about what we are doing when we go out in the field. Are we treating every interaction—every missionary discussion, every chance meeting—like a potential transaction? Are we calculating the 'cost' of sharing the Plan of Salvation? Or are we simply offering the gift, trusting that the Spirit will guide the outcome?

Being Christlike in Every Field

This video is a powerful illustration of what it means to be Christlike. The Master figure in the video embodies the selfless discipleship we are called to emulate. He doesn't ask for payment for nurturing the vulnerable; he simply nurtures. He sees the person, not the potential bill.

As we prepare for our own callings—whether that's serving as companions, leading a Book Club, or simply being an internet missionary from our living rooms—we must internalize this principle. Our commitment to the work cannot be contingent on the investigator's ability to pay for the next meeting, or the family's ability to afford the next set of temple tickets. Our currency must be testimony and love.

A Bite-Sized Mission Prep Skill

So, here is a small skill I want us to focus on this week, especially if you are preparing for missionary discussions or leading a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces. When you feel the conversation getting bogged down in logistics, or when you sense resistance rooted in fear or materialism, pause. Instead of jumping to a doctrinal answer, ask a question that redirects focus back to the *person* and their *feelings*. Try asking, "What is the hardest thing you are wrestling with right now?" This shifts the focus from belief to vulnerability, which is where the Spirit can whisper.

Invitation to Fellowship

If this video resonated with you, if you feel the need to discuss what true, unconditional care looks like in our modern world, I invite you to join us this Sunday. We are hosting a small gathering focused on "Service Beyond Sight" at the local Stake Center. It’s a chance to share experiences—the good, the confusing, and the spiritually challenging—with fellow rogue disciples.

Alternatively, if you prefer to deepen your study at home, I highly recommend diving into the latest teachings on selfless service found in the Iron Rod. You can find excellent material on this topic, or related principles of charity, in LivingBook.

Remember, we are all disciples, everywhere, all the time. Let’s keep practicing the radical, unpaid love that defined the Savior.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Master's care was unconditional, treating the vulnerable with love regardless of circumstance. The hospital's care, in the video, was heavily conditional on payment.

Pause and redirect the focus by asking a question that addresses the person's feelings, such as, 'What is the hardest thing you are wrestling with right now?'

I recommend checking LivingBook for the latest teachings on selfless service found in the Iron Rod.
