The Unashamed Life: Finding Common Ground in the Gospel

It’s funny how the Lord works. You spend years building up a testimony, studying the scriptures, and feeling like you have this solid, unshakeable grasp on the covenants you’ve made. You think you know the answers, especially when you’re deep into missionary discussions or studying the Book of Mormon in a Book Club setting.

Then, you run into a conversation—maybe it’s with a seasoned missionary, maybe it’s with a friend who has been out in the field for years, or maybe it’s just a quiet moment of reflection while studying the Spirit.

The things that truly solidify our discipleship aren't always the grand pronouncements; sometimes, they are the gentle, sometimes convicting, calls to be more positive, more open, and more Christlike in the everyday moments. We are called to be disciples everywhere, all the time, and that includes the messy, unscripted moments of life.

We recently saw a discussion touch on things like spiritual warfare and the nature of good and evil. While the topic was weighty, the underlying thread that kept coming back to me was the power of genuine connection—the kind of connection that points back to the Savior.

When we talk about the 'Father of Lies' or the ways the adversary tries to manipulate, we are really talking about the subtle ways we can let the world’s narratives—the narratives of isolation, of self-sufficiency, or of division—creep into our hearts. The gospel, though, is the ultimate antidote to those whispers.

I was reminded of the principle we often discuss in missionary preparation: that the power of the Gospel isn't in perfect rhetoric, but in genuine testimony and shared vulnerability. When I think about the commitment required to be a returned missionary, or even just a lifelong disciple, it’s not about having all the answers to every philosophical question. It’s about having the unwavering conviction that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.

It takes courage to be called out—to be shown where we need to improve, just as one person was called out in that discussion. But I’ve learned that being called out by a friend, or by the Spirit itself, is often the most loving form of discipleship. It’s the gentle nudge that says, “Brother, remember the core message.”

The Gospel as the Common Ground

Whether we are studying the scriptures in HolyPlaces, or if we are just grabbing coffee with a friend who is exploring the gospel, the common ground always has to be Jesus. It’s the thing that transcends the high-profile moments, the difficult conversations, and even the passing seasons of life. It’s the constant, reliable source of strength.
