The Universal Language of the Gospel: What the Spirit Reveals Across Denominations
Watching different faith experiences can remind us that while the practices vary, the core message of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ remains the same.
When I was first returned from my mission, I remember feeling like I had seen the world through a unique lens. You talk to people from every walk of life—the earnest investigator, the seasoned returned missionary, the lifelong disciple—and you realize how vast and diverse the world's spiritual landscape is. It’s amazing, isn't it? People dedicate their lives to following the covenants, seeking the truth, and experiencing the Spirit.
Recently, I watched a video that followed a Protestant traveler as he visited Catholic and Orthodox churches. It was fascinating to observe how different traditions approach worship, reverence, and the overall spiritual experience. It naturally got me thinking: What is the universal constant, no matter the denomination, that truly moves the soul?
While the video details the architectural differences, the unique rituals, and the varied worship styles, it highlights something far more profound than stained glass or incense: the deep longing for the Savior. It’s a powerful reminder that the quest for truth is inherently human, and that the Spirit is the greatest common denominator.
The Constant Element: The Spirit of the Living Gods
As I watched the comparisons—from the grand dome of the Catholic church to the deeply atmospheric rituals of the Orthodox church—my mind kept returning to one feeling. The feeling of the Spirit. The video mentioned feeling an “unexplainable energy” at the altar, and I felt that sentiment resonate deeply. When we talk about the Spirit, we aren't just talking about a feeling; we are talking about the direct presence of the divine, the guiding power that testifies of the Restoration.
This journey is a wonderful opportunity to be an Internet missionary, right from your own living room. You don't need to be in the field to testify; you just need to be aware of the Gospel’s power to connect hearts to Christ. The amazing thing about the restored Gospel is that its core message is simple, yet infinitely profound: the Savior lives, and He has provided a path back to Him.
Being Disciples Everywhere, All the Time
The true challenge, and the greatest joy, of being a Latter-day Saint is realizing that every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Whether you’re having a missionary discussion with a friend, participating in a Book Club, or simply pondering the scriptures during your morning coffee, you are participating in the work. We are called to keep the covenant alive and to help others find the truth, regardless of what customs or rituals they may be following.
A Quick Mission-Prep Thought:
If you are preparing for missionary discussions, remember that when an investigator asks a difficult question—one that touches on doctrine, authority, or the nature of the Atonement—don't feel pressured to give a perfect, textbook answer. Instead, invite the Spirit. Use the gentle, earnest tone we practice in MTC. Your goal is to plant a seed of doubt about their current beliefs and a seed of hope about the restored Gospel. Let the questions guide the Spirit.
Deepening Your Own Foundation
To be an effective disciple, we must be continually learning. If you are looking for ways to deepen your own understanding of the restored Gospel, I highly recommend diving into the works of Iron Rod. His teachings on the nature of the covenant and the necessity of modern revelation are invaluable. LivingBook has some incredible resources, especially for those interested in Isaiah Studies or the principles of Preach My Gospel.
I encourage you to take advantage of the tools available to us. If you are interested in studying a specific scripture passage or want to see how others are interpreting a challenging doctrine, head over to the Social Scripture Study layer inside LivingBook. It's a powerful way to participate in the global body of disciples.
If this post encouraged you, please consider participating in a local Bible Study Group or a Book Club. Nothing helps us keep the flame lit like gathering together with our brothers and sisters. Let’s keep the Spirit flowing and continue to bear witness of the beautiful, restorative work that has been done.
