The Unseen Bonds: Finding True Value in Family and Covenant
Sometimes the most profound lessons about love and commitment aren't found in textbooks, but in the messy, deeply human moments that test our very foundations.
Brothers and sisters, as we continue on this journey together—this glorious, sometimes confusing, but always purposeful journey of discipleship—I’ve been reflecting a lot lately. We talk so much about the covenants we make, the sacred promises we keep, and the incredible power of the gospel to bind us together. We study the Plan of Salvation, we prepare for our missions, and we learn how to be better disciples in our callings.
But sometimes, the most powerful teachings come from watching the world—from watching the dramas, the heartbreaks, and the fierce loyalties played out in the lives of others. It reminds me that while our focus must always be on the Savior and the work, the principles of deep, unconditional love—the kind that sustains us when everything else falls apart—are universal.
The Unseen Bonds: What True Value Looks Like
Watching this clip, I was struck by the raw, unfiltered emotion. The conversation revolves around money, broken promises, and what people *think* they value versus what truly sustains the soul. There’s a palpable sense of betrayal, of people prioritizing fleeting things—like appearances, or material gain—over the genuine bonds of kinship and commitment.
It echoes something I’ve seen in the field, and what I hope we all remember as we serve. When we are out in the field, or even just in our own homes, we are constantly being tested. We are being asked to sacrifice time, comfort, and sometimes our own pride for the sake of the covenant path. It’s easy, especially when we’re young, to get caught up in the drama—the perceived slight, the temporary disappointment, the feeling of being misunderstood.
But the Spirit whispers a different truth. It whispers that the deepest, most reliable source of strength isn't found in the accolades of the world, or the success of a worldly venture. It’s found in the covenants we keep with Heavenly Father, and the bonds we forge with our fellow disciples.
Being Christlike in Our Relationships
The theme here, as I see it, is about *seeing* true worth. The characters in the video are fighting over who matters most. They are fighting over who will stand by them when the money runs out, when the drama subsides, or when the 'perfect' life crumbles. The realization that true value lies in steadfast commitment—the kind of commitment modeled by the Savior—is profound.
As we strive to be Christlike, we are learning to see people, and ourselves, through the lens of eternal worth. We are learning to look past the temporary 'likes' on social media, or the momentary frustration of a missionary discussion, and focus on the eternal covenant.
A Bite-Sized Mission-Prep Skill: Seeing the Need
Here’s a small skill I want to share with you today, something I’ve learned since returning from my mission. When you are in your missionary discussions, or even just talking to a neighbor, don't just wait for them to ask the next question. Instead, practice active listening to discern the *underlying need*. Are they talking about money because they fear instability? Are they talking about relationships because they fear abandonment? The gospel answers those deep, emotional needs, not just the surface questions.
This week, I challenge you to practice this: In every conversation, pause after they finish speaking and ask, "What is the biggest worry on your heart right now?" Don't offer an answer immediately; just invite them to share the weight. That’s where the Spirit often whispers the invitation to the gospel.
Keep the Momentum Going
The gospel isn't meant to be something we study in isolation. It’s meant to be lived out, shared, and discussed with our brothers and sisters. If you’ve been feeling the pull to deepen your study, I highly recommend checking out the Book Clubs or Bible Study Groups in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful way to engage in that social scripture study layer and wrestle with tough concepts alongside others.
If you’re feeling a bit rusty on your missionary skills, or if you just want to talk through some tough concepts in a low-stakes environment, I’m excited to remind you about our free weekly Disciple Challenge! It’s a great place to practice your testimonies and get some encouragement from fellow disciples.
