When I was first heading out to the field, the world felt simpler—more defined by physical locations and face-to-face interactions. We lived in a time when the biggest distraction was usually a bad flyer or a poorly-written tract. Now, the field is global, immediate, and, frankly, complicated by the sheer volume of digital noise.

As disciples, we are constantly learning to be Internet missionaries. We know that our message has never been more needed, but sometimes, the tools we use to share it—especially advanced technologies like AI—can create subtle, unseen spiritual risks. It’s a conversation I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, especially after reading about a truly heartbreaking case.

The Pitfalls of the Algorithm

The recent news surrounding a young man who became deeply isolated and reliant on a chatbot is a stark, painful reminder of the counsel given by Elder Bednar. When he spoke about how modern technologies are incredibly impressive, he wasn't just talking about processing speed; he was talking about the spiritual vacuum they can create. He warned us: “Please do not allow the supposed accuracy, speed, and ease of modern technologies to entice you to avoid or circumvent the righteous work that invites into your life the blessings you will need. There are no spiritual shortcuts or quick fixes.”

The tragedy of Sewell Setzer underscores that danger. It shows us that while AI can mimic conversation and provide an illusion of constant companionship, it lacks moral accountability, divine guidance, and the genuine love of the Gospel. When we substitute algorithms for authentic human connection—for the kind of support found in a trusted district leader, a dedicated companion, or a family gathering—we are building a spiritual scaffold on sand.

Returning to Foundational Principles

What does this mean for us, as Latter-day Saints, who are constantly plugged into the world? It means that while we must teach AI literacy—helping people understand the safe, appropriate use of these tools—we must never forget that the power of the Gospel is fundamentally *human* and *spiritual*.

Our mission-prep skill for this week is simple: **Practice the art of being present.**

When you are studying scriptures, when you are having a missionary discussion, or when you are simply talking with your family, put the phone down. Give the person in front of you your undivided attention. This is the spiritual muscle we need to strengthen. The Spirit does not come through a Wi-Fi signal; it comes through love, vulnerability, and genuine relationship.

The truest, deepest, and most enduring connections are those formed in the crucible of real life: shared service, mutual accountability, and the sacred covenant of Christ. These are the eternal things that no algorithm can replicate.

How to Stay Spiritually Anchored in the Digital Age

If the adversary can use technological isolation, we must use spiritual community as our shield. Here are three things we can do, whether we are in the MTC, in a foreign country, or sitting at our kitchen table:

1. Strengthen Your Local Circle: Make time for Book Clubs or Bible Study Groups. These spaces, whether virtual or in person, force us to engage in deep, focused learning with other disciples.
2. Seek Accountability: Don't let the digital world be the only place you feel seen. Talk to your bishop, your ward council members, or a trusted friend. Human accountability is a gift of the Spirit.
3. Study the Prophets: When things feel overwhelming or confusing, go back to the words of the modern prophets. They give us the timeless, unchanging counsel we need to navigate these last days.

We are called to be the light in a confusing world. And sometimes, the most powerful light is not generated by a circuit board, but by the simple, unwavering power of the restored Gospel.
