The Unshakeable Anchor: Remembering Who Jesus Is in the Field

Sometimes we get caught up in the mechanics of the work, but remembering *who* Jesus is—our Friend, Teacher, and Redeemer—is the fuel that keeps us going.

There are days in the field, or even in the quiet moments studying scripture at home, when the sheer weight of the work feels immense. We talk about curriculum, about converting hearts, about the logistics of the mission, and all that is good and necessary. But sometimes, I feel like we—the dedicated disciples, the returned missionaries, the lifelong learners—can get so focused on the *doing* that we forget to pause and simply *remember*.

We remember the lessons from the MTC, the earnest counsel from a District Leader, and the diligent study sessions in the Book Club. We are trained to ask the hard questions, to know the scriptures, and to feel the Spirit guide our discussions. But what anchors all of it? What keeps the light burning when the calls are slow or the doctrinal questions are deep?

It’s remembering the Savior. It’s remembering that He is not just a historical figure we study, but a living, present Friend.

He is More Than Just a Lesson

I was reflecting on this recently, and it brought to mind a simple, beautiful declaration: “Jesus is my friend.”

When we talk about missionary preparation, we often focus on our ability to teach. We work on our testimonies, we hone our skills in sharing the plan of salvation. And those skills are vital—they are the tools the Lord has given us for the work. But the source of the power isn't the tool; it's the relationship. The Savior isn't just the subject of our study; He is the central character of our lives.

Think about the roles mentioned in that short video: He is our exemplar, our teacher, our healer, our leader. These aren't just titles; they are experiences we are invited to partake of. When we feel inadequate, when we struggle to articulate the profound truths we’ve learned in our Bible Study Groups, we must anchor ourselves to the reality of who He is.

Embodying the Friendship

This realization shifts our focus from *performance* to *participation*. Being a disciple isn't just about knowing the answers; it's about mirroring the Savior's attributes. It’s about striving to be Christlike in the small moments—the patience with a difficult investigator, the humility when we realize we don't know an answer, or the kindness shown to a struggling companion.

This is the essence of the Internet Missionary life, isn't it? It’s doing the work with the heart of a friend, guided by the Spirit, knowing that every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. We can’t *force* the Spirit, but we can certainly cultivate the environment—through consistent scripture study, through vulnerability, and through remembering the depth of our friendship with Him.

A Bite of Preparation

If you're feeling the weight of the mission prep or just need a spiritual lift, here’s a small challenge for us all this week: When you are studying scriptures this week, don't just look up the verses. Pause after reading a passage and ask yourself, "How would Jesus respond to this situation *as my friend*?" Let that answer guide your testimony or your conversation.

The Brethren have laid out the path for us, and the scriptures are our guide. But the constant, sustaining power comes from keeping Jesus—our Friend—at the center of everything.

If you want to deepen this study with others, I highly recommend checking out the Book Club options in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful way to process these big ideas with fellow disciples.
