The Unshakeable Freedom Christ Offers: A Contrast in Conscience

Brothers and sisters, as we continue in the sacred work, we are constantly being presented with the starkest contrasts in the field. We see doctrines built on fear, on coercion, and on the ultimate threat of violence. It can be jarring, can’t it? To hear the doctrines of one system—a system that demands adherence to its laws, even unto death—and then hold the glorious, unconditional invitation of the restored gospel right here in our hearts.

I was recently pondering a conversation I saw shared, and it really brought the weight of what we preach to mind. The discussion centered on apostasy laws and the demand for adherence, even when that adherence means denying one's conscience or facing death. It forces us to confront what true freedom actually means.

When the stakes are life or death, the veneer of religious law often peels away, revealing a foundation built not on divine love, but on human fear. We learn in our missionary discussions that the gospel is not a set of rules to be followed to earn favor; it is a gift of grace. It is the promise of eternal life through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel vs. The Sword

The contrast is palpable. On one side, you have systems where changing your mind, changing your allegiance, or simply following your conscience can result in the ultimate penalty. On the other side, we have the words of the Savior: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). That promise—absolute freedom from sin and from fear—is the cornerstone of our message.

Think about what Christ offered: life-giving love. He didn't bring the sword of judgment; He brought the balm of healing. He declared, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). This isn't just theology; it’s the core of our discipleship. It's the power that allows us to be internet missionaries, to be disciples anywhere, all the time, even when the cultural winds are blowing against the Spirit.

This is where our preparation for the field, whether that field is a local ward, a university campus, or a global digital corner, becomes so vital. We must be able to articulate this contrast with clarity, humility, and unshakable testimony.

Mission Prep Skill: Addressing Coercion

If you are preparing for your mission, or if you are simply trying to strengthen your testimony for a challenging conversation, keep this principle handy: When discussing religious law, always pivot back to the universal principle of conscience and divine love. If they present a law based on fear, gently redirect to the Savior’s invitation: “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). It shifts the focus from *what they must obey* to *what Christ freely offers*.
