The Unshakeable Peace: Lessons from the Field

Sometimes, the hardest part of the work isn't the physical challenge—the typhoons, the travel, the unfamiliar food—it's the emotional weight of seeing potential flicker out.

I was recently reflecting on some powerful footage from a returned missionary in the Philippines, and it hit me right where my own heart is when I think about the calling. The stories of navigating super typhoons, eating delicacies like horse, and all the logistical hurdles are incredible to hear. But what resonated deepest wasn't the adventure; it was the profound, quiet testimony of peace.

The missionary spoke about how people initially run when they see the missionaries coming, or how disheartening it is when someone who was progressing—attending church, reading scriptures—gets discouraged by outside voices. It’s a tough spot for any missionary to navigate, to see that light dim.

But then, he shared the core lesson: the peace the gospel brings. He recalled sitting with an older gentleman sharing his struggles, and realizing that the truthfulness of our message wasn't just in the words, but in the peace that followed when those people applied the commandments. That peace, that sense of connection to Heavenly Father, is the currency of the gospel.

The Power of the Common Ground

It’s so powerful to watch two cultures merge and connect over the gospel. That shared commitment to the restored gospel is the most universal language there is. It reminds us that no matter how chaotic the external environment—be it a typhoon or a disagreement in the ward—the gospel provides an unshakeable center.

This is the essence of being a disciple today. We don't need to be physically stationed in a mission field to experience this. We are all called to be internet missionaries. We are called to bring that peace into the homes, the workplaces, and the online spaces we inhabit.
